External links to Scrivener not working from Scapple

Just Run it again and opens in Copyholder…
i.e.
Copied link from/used in Scapple “Link Destination Box”
Pasted it into “Run” command on Windows 11 (latest version) and it still DOES open in copyHolder

But nothing with Scapple → PDF → (inside) Scrivener.

I don’t know if you see an issue with the linked document opening in a copyholder or not, but so you know, that’s intended behavior.

You can change it here:

No thats fine, if using the Run Command… but I need it to work in Scapple/Scrivener
Its Not working in Scrivener
External Links continue to work, just fine

Test that PDF in a PDF reader.
Maybe the link is decorated, but no longer a link.

Scapple isn’t (perhaps) quite intended for that level of complex maneuvering. (Or so I would think, under the current circumstances. – I am just a user.)

Why not just have Scapple share the screen with Scrivener?

Incidentally, In Scrivener, I deleted the documents, emptied the trash.
Deleted the Note in Scapple.
Created a new Note and added a new copied link “Copy Document Link” from Scrivener.
Saved in Scapple and exported to PDF.
Reimported (“Research Files as Short”) into Scrivener and clicked the PDF link.
Nothing happens…
All other Links in the PDF work as expected, opening External Images/Docs, Applications to edit in Scapple and other Apps etc…

Copied the Scapple link into Windows 11 Run Command and hit enter,
The linked document shows up as expected in the “copyHolder”.

So my guess is the link and Scapple is working in the Scapple PDF…
Scrivener does not seem to take any action when the Link is clicked OR silently fails in the background with No error displayed.

No Worries I’ll rename my project back to what it was and find another solution
Thanks to Everyone for your help.

We tried.
. . . . . . . .

But…
Perhaps you missed my question :
Why not just have Scapple share the screen with Scrivener? (No PDF etc.)

Oh, sorry missed you…
Share the Screen?
I think you mean have them both open side by side on the same screen or 2 monitors?
that would be possible if I didn’t have other applications running on those (3 other screens).

I am working on a very large project… I need to Click and GO.

Scrivener is my Visual Command Centre for all World Building-documents linked to creating the Book and Film i.e. Writing, tracking and editing images, video shots and titles, audio etc

So some Documents contain a single or combination of Visual Notes that display, link to and open files in their native applications.

Scapple, was my attempt at having Terrain/World maps with links that open Internal Documents to Scenes/Shots, Villages and a like. (instead of having a local webserver with HTML links).

So in a Document I might look at my map, and ask what does the work on this part of project look like at this point? i.e. For Chapter X - What’s the Script, The Video clip that’s being edited, the Cover Images, storyboard look like, do they need work?

The way I have it setup at the moment allows me to visually see everything and change/modify, anything at a single click from any of my documents, without bloating with Images and Videos in the project, but just link to and open and start editing.

The only thing I had left was understanding if Scapple could help with Map Navigation, since Scrivener does not.
For example, I wanted to be able to look at a village or a market square and move from place to place within the village, or from actor to Actors with a scene with a single click of a visual object (image-s).

For now I will have to use the Inspector & Notes with word-links more than I would like (because I really wanted to keep that space clear for other things related to my Storyboards.)

Yes, side by side is what I meant. Or both literally in the same spot. You’d have to navigate back to your PDF now and then, in Scrivener, no?
If so, clicking the Scapple icon in Windows’ taskbar is even easier, and that would bring your Scapple project to the front. Clicking one of your links in Scapple would bring back Scrivener to the front.

Unless I’m missing something, that should work.
You’d even preserve the ability to edit your Scapple project on the fly.

Yes ,I was initially doing that some time back, but my understanding of Scrivener’s capabilities has changed and so I now utilise each page with it’s inspector in a more powerhouse manner - it’s damn good program if you you can see how to use it within a personal work flow.

With the way I have Scrivener setup, I do nearly everything inside the App.
The only thing I can’t do is Link on Maps to internal Documents.

I have decided to drop Scapple for Map navigation and instead…
(I’ll never know if/when the linking feature will be fixed / added

(1) Create the Map inside my External Application and Export as PNG - Map

(2) Scrivener: In a custom Folder Outside of the Manuscript (but inside of Locations) - Import the Map (image) with “Research Files as Shortcut” to prevent project bloating (Gigabytes on disk).

(3) Inside the same Custom Folder, create a new Map-Document with the name of the Place (from the original Map) and Drag the The “shortcut-map- image” into that Map-Document .

(4) TITLE - at the top of the Map-Document (the one with the embedded shortcut-Map-image) and centred just underneath (the title), create a clickable “Edit Project” link , Linked to the Map’s Project in windows explorer (the native app will open it).

(5) External App: Click the Edit Project Link - make changes to the Map, save and export the Map (as PNG or on top of a previous PNG if the same file exists-to update it) .

(6) Scrivener: Click another document and then click back to see the updated changes.

(6) On the Map-png I am going to make the names of Specific Objects and Places more visible “Spelt out” (not just Symbols/Icons) so that in the Inspector-Notes of the Map-Document
(I don’t have to remember names to type and create as internal links to navigate between the various objects/docs - within Scrivener)

The setup is only done once…for each Map
So, if I have a Map of a city, surrounded by Towns and I want to navigate to the Town or Market place…
I’ll just look at the name on the map, then look-right at the Inspector (always open)
click the corresponding name to navigate to that Map-Document, which will have same structure as any other Map-Document.

This way Map-Documents and Inspector notes remain fixed/linked and I can locate and edit the Maps at a glance and in-place.
Since the Maps are linked-shortcuts, they can always be edited in place (via the external App link).

I plan to do the same for my Actor Folder/Documents:

Project Edit links: Added beneath title…
So I can update Media files in place (Imported with “Research Files as Shortcuts”)

(1) Edit Graphic(s) (link externally) : image-graphics - exported as PNG
(2) Edit Video (link externally) : Modify and Export MP4 rough cut / placeholder
(3) Edit Audio(link externally) : Modify and Export MP3/AAC rough cut / placeholder

Scrivener: Play back: Video and Audio
(File->Options->Document Links ->Open clicked document links in: Quick Reference Panel)
Note: Cannot use CopyHolder panel - because it does not support playback controls.

                                                                  Heroine XYZ Battle Dress
Edit Graphic : Edit Video : Edit Audio

The video of the Actor is a 3D video of a rotating actor in full armour/dress unlike other videos which are scenes/shots - similar to what you see in games.

  • Female (folder)
    – Heroine XYZ (folder)
