Failure importing pdf in Windows XP[BUG LOGGED]

Hi, everybody!
Since I’ve done last update to Beta 1.3, couldn’t import .pdf files to my project . No matter if I drag the file I need or use the File - Import feature. So, although it appears in my outline, when I select it, the editor keeps blank. Eventually, Scrivener crashes if I click over the editor. Does anyone experiece the same problem?

Could you email the pdf as I can’t replicate this with the pdf samples I have?

I’m having the same issue. A few minutes ago I tried to import seven different PDFs. None of them can be seen on Scrivener. I thought this was a random issue (I posted somewhere else, something about freezing problems with PDFs), but It seems to be systematic. This PDF may serve as an example:
http://blog.apastyle.org/files/how-to-cite-something-you-found-on-a-website-in-apa-style—table.pdf

Is there anything that can be done? I really need those PDFs in my project.

This is an interesting one as I have had no trouble importing this file either via import menu or dragging and dropping onto the research folder.

I initially thought the long file name could be causing the problem:
how-to-cite-something-you-found-on-a-website-in-apa-style—table.pdf

However, that didn’t cause a problem - you might want to rename to a shorter file name and re-test but I doubt it’s going to fix anything?

What version of Adobe Acrobat Reader have you installed on your machine?

P.S. Other users reporting PDF import problems have had additional fullstops ‘.’ in the PDF file name. Simply removing them allows the import. There is a known bug whereby any file with additional full stops in the file name will be be able to be imported. i.e. a file name like ‘12.BeatSheet.pdf’ should be renamed to ‘12-BeatSheet.pdf’.

Viewer

I’m not quite sure that this is really a bug. It seems to be related to one particular template.

In one of my projects, I could not view the pdf files I imported.
After the first one that did not work, I tried it out with several others and none of them would be viewable, although in the Tutorial and in some others of my own projects, this works perfectly well.
I cannot see any difference in settings, that might affect the viewer.
Some of my projects are based on the “blank” template, some others on my own templates (2 until now, to give it a try).

At first, I thought this was due to some of the pdf files.
I tried it out in the same project with other pdf’s. Nothing in the viewer, and the page numbers on the top left of the viewer are both set to zero.
Then I tried the same with the same pdf’s in other projects, and there, it would work fine.

The project in which I encounter this problem is based on my template, itself based on “TemplateAcademic”.
Now after a little check, it seems that the viewer works perfectly in the projects based on “blank” and on “fiction”.
Until now, these are the three templates I haved tried out.

Okay, I’ll look into this. I’ve logged it as a bug.

Hi,

Additional info to this :

In one of the projects where the viewer did not work since several days, it does today…

AND
Yesterday, I could not copy any text from the pdfs that I could see in the viewer, and today even this works fine.

Now I’m wondering if there is some toggle on/off, which I might have hit witout knowing…

Hello again,

I made some pdf files with “cute pfd writer” on pages opened in Mozilla Firefox.
The pages came from different sources.
All are made exactly the same way, but only one of them would show in the viewer.

Then I made pdf files via MS OneNote and Word.
They are not viewable either.
The weird thing is that, this time, I cannot even see the boxes showing the numbers of pages.

Here are some of these files.

I hope this will be useful.
