File Freezes

I closed down my computer, and how Scrivener won’t open any of my files! I’ve tried reinstalling and nothing seems to work. HELP! I’m a pastor and tomorrow’s sermon is on Scrivener!

Forgot to add … when I go to open a recent file (or existing) it shows my file in the proper format (.scriv) but it won’t do anything. If I go to to my file finder (I’m using a MacBook Pro), it shows the file as a .zip, but it won’t uncompress.

If Finder is showing you a ZIP file, then you’re looking somewhere other than at the live project opened by Scrivener. Probably at your automatic backups.

Was there a recent system update or did you recently update Scrivener? Are you using any security software? Silently refusing to open files is often an indication that some security tool is refusing to allow Scrivener access to its own files, and that most commonly happens after an update.

Thanks for those suggestions. I did find the actual .scriv file (it was in a different folder), but it still wouldn’t open. After poking around a bit, I think I’ve figured out that it has something to do with not connecting online. I was able to download the scriv file from my OneDrive, and now it opens. Looks like I’ll have to do that for all of my file! Not sure why. So thanks for the suggestions - I’m going to do a bit more poking around to see if I can nail down the root cause.
But the good news - my file is accessible! Whew!

Ah, yes, that would do it.

All cloud services should be configured to “keep downloaded” (or whatever terminology the service uses) with respect to all Scrivener projects.

I believe it’s the “Files on Demand” tool in OneDrive.

Thanks - I got my initial file back, but still need to figure out how to have the files automatically live on my laptop. I’ll look for that tool.
