Finally planned a novel in Scrivener

Ok, I’m not the most efficient writer - I’ve been at the same story for two and a half years, and only now have I sat down and plotted the entire thing from beginning to end. This was precipitated by a realisation that my organic style of writing was leading to unnecessary sub-plots and complexity that was only making the book unreadable.

So, today I tore my work apart, pared it down to the core story again, and used the corkboard to storyboard my novel. And by Jove I think I might have a book planned! Being able to see the flow from beginning to end is invaluable, especially as I can see now when I sit down in the evenings to write that I have my topics already planned.

I haven’t met many kinds of software that help me achieve something while at the same time being a joy to use unto themselves, but Scrivener is definitely that!

Thanks!

Hi Amber, I am a newbie here, and am very glad to have joined this forum. Whew, I too am an organic writer, preferring to write everything down as I think, and then get lost in the process. Therefore the reason for using Scrivener. It is great to know that Scrivener is helping us ‘organics’ to get our story straight, as I tried the physical card thing first, (what a shlepp!) too messy, and I was more confused after that then when I wrote without planning.
I especially like Scrivener for the corkboard, and am also in the process of redoing my story in the way you have, so thank you for posting your success. Anyone can write a book, but does it make sense? This way at least it follows and it is nice seeing it all laid out, being able to swop chapters, and see the progression of the novel. Patricia Cornwell, English writer, very famous, uses the card method on her wall to lay out the links and threads. Don;t know if she has Scrivener, it would make her life easier. Thanks for your post, lots of illumination there. Hope your book takes off in leaps and bounds, and you have much success with it.
