First Mac...looking at the Mini now

This will help.

Thanks, Hugh. We’re underway…

Hugh–or anyone–,

I want to open an existing PC Scrivener project on the Mac and then learn about best practices for project management on the Mac going forward (backups, etc.). I know there’s a lot of that info around here, but if there’s one or two threads or how-to’s that are best, I’d appreciate any links.

I’m particularly interested, at this point, in just opening the PC project safely on the Mac.

THANKS

This should help with questions about your project’s cross-platform compatibility. Bear in mind that in transferring your project from your Windows machine to your Mac, you need to make sure that you transfer the entire project folder (xxxx.scriv), not just the .scrivx file, to the Mac, and that on the Mac you simply double-click on the entire project folder (xxxx.scriv), which will now be masquerading as a file, to open it in Scrivener.

I don’t think that I can point to any particular threads on project management that are really any better than others. There are a great many, and what’s more, you’ll find that you develop your own habits and procedures. But it may be worth your while re-visiting the Interactive Tutorial (under the Help menu) and some of the videos on this page, equipped as you are now with a Scrivener version with additional functionality.

And, of course, this forum is great for specific questions.

Perfect, Hugh. Thanks again.

Glad to help. One other thing has occurred to me. I don’t know how you’re moving your project from your Windows computer to your new Mac - but if you plan to do it via the Cloud, this is a good page to read first.

OK, thanks. I’m going to do the move via dropbox, so this is just the ticket.

Dropbox is good, unlike one or two other Cloud services, which can screw up a Scrivener project. In my view, generally speaking it’s a good idea to move a project between computers via the Cloud as a zipped-up backup file; that way, it’s less vulnerable. You create a zipped-up backup using Scrivener for Windows, transfer it across to your Mac, unzip it by double-clicking it on, say, the desktop of your Mac, and then double-click the xxxx.scriv project folder (masquerading as a file) that’s then revealed, in order to open it in Scrivener.

That’s what I needed to know. I’ll be doing that a little later today and will report results. Thanks.

Unzipping and opening the project on the Mac went very smoothly. I don’t plan to continue working with that same project on the PC, so I’m off to learn Scrivener for Mac and shape my workflow and backup routine. Thanks yet again.

FYI, I’m loving my new Mac Mini and I’m loving Scrivener on the Mac. What a difference!

I’m taking to the Mac environs pretty well, too. I’m getting my head around the file system and enjoying a lot of the Mac features. The Time Machine is up and running. I did have to dig a bit into the key bindings and learn how to set up my text-editing shortcuts to match those of the PC–i.e., as God intended them to be. I’ve got some thirty years of muscle memory invested in those shortcuts. I’m not changin’ now! But things are running smoothly.

The tough part, of course, is now that the Mac-shopping and setup distractions are largely done, there’s nothing keeping me from the hard work of this #&!@ writing!

:open_mouth: WOT!? OFF-TOPICing & PROCRASTINATION!! Wot’s y’ problem?

Ha. There’s no problem. It’s my usual MO!
