In the binder I have a number of folders representing ‘Chapters’. Within each Chapter folder there are 10 to 12 text files. Is there any way to determine the text files “total” accumulated word count for the “entire” Chapter folder?
Yes indeed! There’s an internal meta data field called Total Word Count which accounts for everything inside and below a certain document level. You can have it displayed on the Outliner by clicking on the black triangle pointing downwards and selecting it from there.
Just now had a need to use the feature. However, no luck on my end. Version 1.8.6.0 Windows 7 Professional. Do not understand what “black arrow” and “where it is”. Tried looking everywhere but could not find anything in the menus either.
I am at Folder Level in the binder. I have clicked on a folder then clicked the “Outliner” button. I must be overlooking something. Duh, one would think that wouldn’t they
View > Outliner Columns > Total Word Count. It’s also accessible via the button to the right of the outliner column headers in the editor, just above the scroll bar.
Thanks. I am getting the Word Count now. However, I only get the Word Count per each Text File. I also have displayed Total Word Count but it does not show the accumulative total for the entire Folder. It duplicates the Word Count. Is that the nature of the beast?
The outliner shows the contents of the item you have selected in the binder, so in order to see the total word count for a given folder, you will need to select its parent container to load in the outliner. That way the folder of interest will appear in the outliner and you will be able to view its meta-data, including the total word count (the sun of the folder’s text and its subdocuments’ text).
When the editor is displaying the outliner, you should see the column headers in a row just below the editor header (where the editors split buttons are located). Between the editor split buttons and the scroll bar will be a button with a black triangle which you can click to have quick access to the different meta-data columns available for the outliner. This only appears when the editor is showing the outliner.
No problem, I missed the part where you’d selected the folder you wanted to see the count on, so the instructions were understandably confusing. I’m glad you’ve got it all sorted now.
