Folders, Parent Documents and edit scrivenings

Forgive me if this is a noob question; and I did search for an answer before posting.

I can’t seem to figure out a way to get binder selection to display what I (perhaps only I) consider to be the logical extension of its metaphors.
When I click on a “folder” - which to mind is a collection of documents - I’d like to see index cards or outline etc. So far so good. No problem.
When I click on a “file” that has children - which to my mind is a document that is broken down into subsections - I’d like it automatically enter an edit Scrivenings session.
Now as far as I can tell no current preference allows me to set both these behaviours working automatically this way at the same time.

In short, I’d like to be able specifically set the display of files with children, separate from the behaviour of folders.

Am I missing something?

Hi,

No, you’re not missing anything. The whole way the corkboard, outliner and E.S. work together has been rethought and overhauled for 2.0, though, making all of this much, much more intuitive. By default, containers will act like normal documents rather than like groups and just show their single contents (with a preference to change this), but it will be much easier to switch in and out of E.S. and the other modes.

All the best,
Keith

You aren’t missing anything. The way things are set up currently, document stacks are either treated as folders or documents. That setting is in the Navigation tab in Preferences. You can only select one default view mode for both folders/stacks, however the Opt key can be used to change this on a per-click basis. If you have “As corkboard” selected as the default view mode, holding down the Option key and clicking on a folder/stack will open it in Edit Scrivenings.

Yeah, what Keith said. Ha.

Thanks to both of you. Glad to see I’m not just being weird here. Looking forward to 2.0.

A request for a future release of Scrivener.
I apologize in advance if this request is already documented and buried somewhere in the forum.

I’d like to see a count of items that any given folder (or parent document) contains, listed in brackets after the folder name. For example, if the folder “Chapter” contained three documents and another sub-folder, then in the Binder “Chapter” would appear as:

Chapter (4)

Keith, any chance this is possible?

Thank you

This will be a preference in 2.0 - already done!
Best,
Keith
