footnotes/comments in Windows

Apologies if similar requests have been noted already on this board. I did a search and didn’t find any, but I could have missed them.

I recently bought the Windows version of Scrivener for my office computer after using Scrivener for Mac on my laptop for a year or so. I was disappointed to see that the Windows version has only inline footnotes and comments, without the option of seeing them in a panel on the right side of the screen like in the Mac version. Since I’m using Scrivener to write dissertation chapters, footnote management is important to me, and especially with a large number of long-ish footnotes, it’s much easier to write, edit, and format them in a separate panel rather than inline. Since I’m also saving my .scriv file in Dropbox and opening it on both my Mac laptop and Windows desktop, the footnote issue also seems to make portability between the 2 platforms less seamless.

Thanks for considering my request!

This is coming, don’t worry! Lee has already built the panel and I’ve seen it in action; it looks just like the Mac one. However, it’s read-only at the moment, so it won’t actually appear in the official Windows builds until Lee has finished making it fully editable. It’s definitely on the way, and work has started on it, though.

All the best,
Keith

Terrific, thank you so much for your response, Keith, and it’s great to hear that this feature is in the works!

Really glad this function is coming.

Currently a fiction writing user, but soon to be an MA and then Phd writing user. I know that citation management “plug-in” and other possibilities have been mentioned on these boards before (I am a new user, and being a windows user only just got Scrivener this year).

But I just wanted to say that I have introduced my writers group to Scrivener (at least 2 uptakes out of 5 attendees that week!) and will soon be plugging it to other students. We will all be really excited about any and all improvements for referencing source materials. We are out here, cheering you on.

Thanks,

Eva

Hi Eva,

Thanks for introducing others to Scrivener! Much appreciated!

All the best,
Keith

Once upon a time, before the Mac version had inspector footnotes, I solved this problem by putting the reference text in separate documents, placed in the binder at the spot where the note reference would go.

My field uses endnotes, rather than footnotes, so it was a simple matter to drag the “note” files into consecutive order at the end once I’d finished changing things. If you ultimately need footnotes, there might be some cutting and pasting involved, but this approach should still work.
