Footnotes Interline

Hello everyone !

An important feature for researchers is missing: the ability to adjust the line spacing of footnotes.

In the compilation mode, you can opt for single spacing. However, the text in italic in the footnotes is not correctly spaced.

Would it be possible to integrate a feature that allows you to specifically choose the line spacing (in exact points and not in lines)? The text in italics would no longer be a problem and would be properly handled.

Would it be possible for you to attach or send us a zipped-up copy of a project showing that issue? I have a feeling that allowing you to choose spacing would not help here, and that it is just the macOS text system adjusting spacing for certain features in the text. Normally it does that for things like subscripts and superscripts, though, which I cannot see in your screenshot, so I would just like to see what is going on there.

I’ve been away on holiday for the past two weeks, but in case you missed it, Ioa replied to the email you sent us to say that we have been unable to download the project from the links you provided, I’m afraid. If you haven’t seen his email, please check your junk folder - our support emails come from a tenderapp.com address (we use the Tenderapp support system). In case you cannot find it, here is the text of Ioa’s reply:

Sorry for the delay in getting back with you, Keith is currently on holiday and this was forwarded to my attention.

I was unable to download the project, I tried yesterday and kept getting disconnected from the service and it seems they offer no way to resume it. We might be able to more easily transfer just the part that really matters though, rather than all 120mb of research material and so forth.

Here is how I would do it:

1. In the current project open File/Compile…, right-click on the compile Format you are using in the left sidebar, and export it to a file.
2. Use File/New Project… and create a new “Blank” project.
3. Drag and drop a few documents with footnotes that will demonstrate the problem from your main project into the draft folder of this new blank project.
4. In the test project, load compile, and then use the gear button in the footer of the Format sidebar to import your compile settings file.
   5, Assign the test documents you dragged in to the Layout they would be using in the main project, and run a quick test compile to ensure the problem still exists.
5. Now you should have a neat and tidy project that can be attached to email.

In response to your question on integrating a feature to choose the line spacing for footnotes:

There is indeed the “Other” choice in the line-height dropdown in the Format Bar. You can set a paragraph to have a line height of precisely a certain number of points, even if the individual lines themselves larger or smaller—it’s useful for super/subscripting.

I don’t think that’s quite what you’re looking for however since you seem mainly to want full formatting control over footnote body text. That might not be something in scope for Scrivener, to be honest. This is more of a writing tool than a design tool—I mean to say it’s expected there are many little things like this that a discerning individual would need to do after the principle writing phase is complete, in a tool more oriented toward design.

If you could send us a way of accessing the project or of the parts that count so that we can test, that would be great.
