I have just gotten my copy of version 2. I have been experimenting with footnotes and am having trouble getting them to print out in any kind of document.
As an experiment, I tried footnoting a current document I have: no footnotes appear in the exported file.
Then I tried the tutorial and doing the footnote section, doing exactly as it suggests, then exporting: still not footnote.
I even created a one sentence paragraph document in a new scrivener project: I still can’t get a footnote to appear.
I am feeling quite silly and stupid, what am I missing?
First, some nomenclature When you say you’ve printed out to a document, do you mean by that you’ve used the Printing/PDF method in the “Compile for:” drop-down? If so, you’ll need to accommodate for the fact that the print method is quite simple and only supports endnotes. This tool isn’t really meant to replace what a word processor can accomplish. For some usages, it can work just fine as an end product, but for many authors it’s more suited to proofing. So try scrolling down to the bottom of the PDF and checking there for your notes.
If you mean you’ve chosen Rich Text in the “Compile for:” drop-down, then that is another matter entirely. What might very well be the case is that you are opening these RTF files in a program that doesn’t support footnotes. TextEdit is a common culprit here, as are many simple word processors based on the Mac Cocoa system. You will need to use a more fully featured word processor like Word, Nisus Writer Pro, Mellel, or OpenOffice.org.
AmberV,
Your second paragraph hit the nail. Yes, I had been opening the saved document in PathFinder, and it uses Text Edit as default. Opening in my trusty Nisus Writer Pro, I see all is actually there.
Much thanks to you,
Craig
