Formatting custom numbered lists

I am writing a book in bible verse form. I can create custom styles for my verses, but I would like the verses to be numbered in a list so I can move them around. I can’t see how to combine the two functions - the indentation, font, and so on that I’ve defined in my stye plus the custom numbering (which is just a number without a suffix). I want it to look something like this:

1 stuff stuff verse stuf here and if it wraps
then either have the next line indented

    2 or do the opposite and

have the first line indented some fixed amount instead.

Is this doable?

Woops, my text formatting got caught up in the forum’s markdown or something.

1 Example One, the verse is outdented
      with subsequent lines indented
 
      2 Example 2, the verse is indented with
subsequent lines at the margin.

The key thing is I need to figure out how to do the formatting and how to make it apply to a custom numbered list because I’ll be moving verses around in the chapter and I don’t want to manually maintain their numbering.
