I am not a screenwriter myself, but Fountain’s markdown like plaintext format could be of interest to those who work in that industry. It may be worth watching. If the format takes off, it could be a good inclusion in Scrivener. The code is open source, and the developers also seem to have provided good resources for integration. An Xcode project already exists, so mac integration shouldn’t be too hard.
Interesting - I’ve had looking at Stu Maschwitz’s Markdown-for-screenwriters on my list for a little while, and it looks as though his work has been merged into this. I’ve added it to my list for investigation - it may well be a 3.0 thing, but it’s definitely interesting. Thanks for bringing it to my attention!
Hello again, Scrivener friends. It’s been awhile. There certainly are an awful lot of you now. Weighing in on Fountain:
What I like about Fountain is that it turns script-writing into just plain old writing, words on paper, and removes the temptation to edit/format as you go. I don’t know about the rest of you, but my best ideas come when my fingers are moving on the keyboard — when the writing’s not going well, I can fritter away the better part of an afternoon trying to get a scene to land exactly where I want it to in a script. Which is, of course, ridiculous and an utter waste of time and can lead to drink. In Fountain, I don’t really know where I am on a page, or in a document, and that, to me, seems liberating.
Should Scrivener support Fountain? At this early stage, I fall distinctly into the It Would Be Nice, But It’s Not A Must camp. Scrivener already supports Fountain simply by supporting .txt, after all. It’s trivial for me to export from Scrivener as a .txt file and dump a script into Fade In or whatever when I want to check as-formatted page count, but I’m nothing if not promiscuous when it comes to software. For most people, that’s one too many apps (and steps) to make Fountain + Scrivener worth their while.
It’s weird, Keith: remember not long ago when you’d get all those douchey “Put this into Scrivener or I’ll go somewhere else!” messages in the forum? From what I gather, the shoe’s on the other foot now. It seems that Scrivener is ubiquitous enough these days that I think not supporting Fountain wouldn’t be an issue for you guys, but supporting it would be a huge benefit to Fountain. I’d love to see you support it because I’d like to see it succeed.
I’m rambling now, and I have this thing in my head that supporting Fountain would also make the Scrivener for iPad thing somewhat easier, but I can’t articulate that idea quite yet.
Anyway, miss you all, and I’m thrilled for your success! Well deserved!
Sean! Nice to see you around these parts again - it has indeed been a while.
Dammit, that’s a good idea! You know, we’ve been pondering on how we are going to get scriptwriting working with the iPad version, and on how we’re going to sync. A markup standard like this might be a good idea, and I’ll definitely look into it.
Hi. How ya been? Vic-k-ys been normal. Wocks been a pain. I’m being edumacated. I have building up a stockpile if rowen alpenstocks (yes that was from the thesaurus) for the moribund equine flagellation exercise we so enjoy.
