Freezing when I try to switch between folders in the binder

Hi,

I’m a very recent new user of Scrivener (I downloaded the 1.x trial a couple of weeks ago, followed by 2.0 this week), and first of all want to say how much I love it - this is an amazing, incredible (and all the other words I know you’ve heard thousands of times by now) piece of software you have created - thank you so much!

I’ve had a quick browse of this forum and can’t see this specific issue mentioned, but it has happened to me multiple times (I’d say 10-15 times so far) since installing 2.0, so I thought I would report it here. What happens is that I’ll be merrily working away in corkboard mode, messing about with my index cards, and then I try to switch to another chapter by clicking on the relevant icon in the Binder, and… nothing happens. The corkboard won’t switch over to show the index cards in the chapter I’m trying to switch to, and Scrivener will be come ALMOST totally unresponsive. BUT if I click on the Scrivener icon in the dock, it won’t show “not responding” and I’m also able to click on the menu bar at the top of the screen - the menus will drop down, but nothing will happen if I try to click on anything. I can still always click between Scrivener and other applications - it hasn’t frozen my whole Mac up at any point. But when I click back to Scrivener, I will eventually see that the toolbar has disappeared, and there will just be a white blank space in its place. At that point I need to force quit and restart Scrivener. Every time but one, ALL changes I’d made before Scrivener froze up have been intact - there was one time that the last few words I’d typed on an index card were missing, but that’s it.

After the first few times this happened, I figured out how to turn Console on, so… here are some Scrivener-related things that appear in there. It’s been on for a couple of days, so apologies for the fact that there will no doubt be screeds of irrelevant things pasted here, but I don’t know what’s important and what’s not! Apologies also for the fact that it seems to be mostly the same line over and over again since Tuesday - I thought maybe I’d just post one instance of it, but again… I don’t know whether it’s important to post all of them or not!

Ugh!!! The same thing is happening, over and over again. I didn’t have this problem at all with 1.0 (or 1.5 or whatever it was )… but this is really frustrating. Even when I force quit Scrivener and reopen, I’ll find that I STILL can’t click between folders/chapters/whatever in the Binder. The main editor screen will just be frozen on the same thing, and no amount of clicking to try to open a different chapter or whatever will do anything. It seems to happen in various “flavors” - sometimes I can actually select different folders in the Binder… but the contents won’t appear in the editor, that will still be stubbornly frozen. Other times, I can’t even get the Binder to register that I’m trying to click on anything - that’s frozen too. I can select “file - close project”, but then when I reopen it? Still frozen where I left off. If I close it enough times and reopen, eventually it starts working OK again. And then starts with the freezing stuff again.

Any ideas at all, anyone, what may be causing this, and what I can do to fix it? I LOVE Scrivener, the old and the new version, but this is driving me nuts.

Not sure if this is the same bug or not, different console message, but I just had a similar experience. Working in Outliner with a collection, I switched off all columns but one for custom meta-data. I edited the meta-data without problem (rather quickly–the idea was to tab through and paste the same info into everything, so I went through about 30 documents in a couple seconds) but when I tried to switch to another collection, although it appeared properly in the binder, and the proper title of the collection, when selected, appeared in the editor header, the editor itself didn’t switch to show the selected collection. If I switched to Corkboard mode it displayed properly, and if I selected a single document it displayed the text of that, but if I tried to view Outliner it was stuck on the original collection. I tried opening other columns (title and synopsis, etc.) and they opened fine, but I couldn’t get out of that collection and ultimately had to close the project.

Console meanwhile went crazy and displayed this so many times it couldn’t keep up with itself and had to discard some every second:

I’ve also had this happen many times over a couple of hours of using the 2.0 beta today. I changed exactly one option before things started going a bit wonky: I switched on the status stamp on the index cards (very helpful for the way I use Scrivener, I found).

Today has been the day I’ve used this new version most in one sitting, and I didn’t have the issue with switching before starting to configure the program a bit more.

I’m having the same thing happen on and off today, but I’ve discovered something that seems to “fix” it at least most of (but not all) the time. If I try to click between folders in the binder and the view in the editor seems frozen (I hope I’m making sense here, as I’m so new to Scrivener that my terminology is no doubt a bit "off), then if I select View - Scrivenings, Scrivener will respond most of the time. Then I can click back to the corkboard, and most of the time (touch wood), everything seems to be back to normal and I can carry on with what I’m doing. A couple of times, though, clicking View - Scrivenings has had no effect whatsoever, the whole thing’s frozen up, and eventually the toolbar has disappeared and been replaced by the blank white space that means I need to shut Scrivener down and reopen. But for anyone who’s experiencing something similar, this might work for you. Not perfect, but better than the frustration of having everything freeze up over and over and over again and having no options but to shut the program down and hope it works upon restarting!

I just had the same freezing experience a couple of times and force-quitted every time. But this trick with clicking on Scrivenings-mode really works, thanks for the tip, RubyRed!

Hi have the very same issue as RubyRed. Same console logs, same symptoms. I am still trying to find a consistent way to replicate, but I haven’t found yet. But I found that this problem happens a lot more frequently when I switch my project from one computer to another :

Edit a project on one computer
Zip the project
Unzip it on another computer
Work on the project on that other computer
Zip again, etc.
Hope this could help to eventually solve the bug…

Sorry for the late reply. This looks like a bug that I could never track down or reproduce. I saw it once, Ioa saw it once, and that was it. Typically it now rears its ugly head!

Could you please zip up and send me a project exhibiting this behaviour and tell me what I need to do to see the bug for myself? Send the e-mail to support AT literatureandlatte DOT com and include “(for Keith as requested on forums)” in the subject line so that Ioa sends it straight over to me.

If someone can help me reproduce this over e-mail then I’ll make it a priority to fix it as quickly as I can.

I have this “frozen binder” problem, too. The last thing that I recall doing before I realized there was a problem was a batch (for all chapters) Document-Convert-Formatting to Default Text style. But I can’t say that the conversion “caused” the problem. This is an old (Scrivener 1.5) file, which I opened for the first time in Scrivener 2.0 (6000). The file is about 7 MB. I’m running on a 3-yr-old MacBook Pro, 4 GB memory, Mac OX X 10.6.4. I set all my preferences to Default to see if that made a difference – it doesn’t.

Do you know if this is something likely to be in my project file? If so, any idea if the file might be damaged? Would reinstalling Scrivener help?

I’m sorry to have this problem; I’m thrilled to have Scrivener 2.0.

Try re-downloading and re-installing, as I uploaded build 6076 last night which fixes a lot of crashes and freezes. It may not fix this issue, but I’d like to rule that out at least.

Excellent! Thanks, Keith. The download and reinstall seem to solve the freezing problem.

But it doesn’t seem like I can select a range of folders and convert the documents inside them to the project default task. Is there a way of doing this, or is it all convert folder by folder. (I also tried Edit Scrivenings to group the documents, but that that didn’t work either. Is there another way of doing the conversion?

Thanks for the follow-up. I have about 60 documents, in, say, 10 folders (probably more because those are nested). They have a variety of different fonts. I’d like them all to have the Optima font (the default a Scrivener project). Is there a way I can change them all at once, or do I need to change each document individually?

Hi Linn,

You should be able to select in the Binder the documents you want to convert and then use the option Documents>Convert>Formatting to Default Text Style and do all your files at once. (You could also have them all open in a Scrivenings session, select all, and do this, but you don’t need to.) Make sure that the formatting is how you want it in the Preference settings and that you’re not using the Project>Text Preferences… to override it for your particular project. (Or rather, make sure that if you are overriding the global preferences, that the formatting there is how you want it to appear.)

Thanks for the help. This works fine. I was hoping that I wouldn’t have to go directly into my hierarchy of folders and documents. But it’s easy enough to expand all and then select it before using the Convert to default text style.
