Full screen mode typing delay

I’ve noticed this for awhile now and have tried various settings like turning off spelling, grammar and other on-the-fly type correction settings and no matter what the typing delay in full screen mode is just way too slow.

I am using a MacPro G5 Dual 2.66Ghz with 3GB RAM with Snow Leopard. I am only experiencing this in full screen mode not in regular edit mode and not in other programs.

Is this a know issue/bug? It’s really annoying and makes full-screen pretty useless.

Is there a combination of pref settings to speed up Full Screen mode. It truly is my preferred way to work.

I assume you mean a MacPro Intel computer with Snow Leopard, as there is no way to run Snow Leopard on a G5 PowerMac. In that case, yes this is a known issue with Snow Leopard’s text engine and fixes are being worked on. In the meantime, also make sure you have the option set to hide the main application in full screen mode. You’ll find that option in the full screen section for preferences. Having it visible can have a very negative impact on performance.

The next best thing you can do is make sure none of your sections are too long. Around 2,000 words and things will start to get annoyingly slow.

sorry, yes, it is an intel dual Mac as follows:
Model Name: Mac Pro
Model Identifier: MacPro1,1
Processor Name: Dual-Core Intel Xeon
Processor Speed: 2.66 GHz
Number Of Processors: 2
Total Number Of Cores: 4
L2 Cache (per processor): 4 MB
Memory: 3 GB
Bus Speed: 1.33 GHz

Text selection is small, less than 500 words.

“Hide Main WIndow” is already selected in the FULL SCREEN Preferences. Still very slow. So, I guess my only option then is to wait for an update? Is this an update to Scrivener or and OSX update you’re referring to?

This will be an update to Scrivener, probably 2.0. Though it would be nice if Apple fixed their code, I wouldn’t depend on it.

I’m thinking about it further. There does seem to be some variable in the mix that might be slowing things down for you even more than should be the case. The machine I’m on right now is similar to yours, though the 2.0ghz model instead of the 2.66ghz model. Everything else is the same—a bit more RAM—and I’ve got real-time typing speeds at 3,500 words in full screen. Do you have any third-party spell checkers or text expanders running in the background? I have Typinator running.

Does the problem go away when you close and restart the program, and then turn up again after a while of typing?

It is always present. I’ve not been able to use the FULL SCREEN mode without frustrating delays, ever.

That is strange. Can you e-mail me at support AT literatureandlatte DOT com?

I had a thought that Suitcase Fusion 2 might be related to the problem. So, I shut it down and restarted Scrivener and the delay was gone. Restarted Fusion 2 and the problem returned. I am also experiencing a delay now in Safari typing this message. So, Suitcase Fusion 2 and the Snow Leopard text engine must be the culprit. At least I now have a workaround to enjoy the great feature FULL SCREEN mode with Scrivener.

Ah, many thanks for the update. That definitely sounds as though Suitcase Fusion 2.0 is the culprit. Strange it only affects full screen though.
All the best,
Keith
