I’ve been using the TOC generation system given in the manual for pdf’s and rft, but it’s coming out…poorly.
First of all, the numbers don’t show up, at all. I get
for rtf/word and 1 for PDF for all toc entries. I know they don’t automatically update but these TOC’s don’t seem to be usable at all.
the second problem is that the links don’t refer to internal locations in the document, but to the external scrivener files-- and this is the case whether it’s PDF or doc/rtf.
Is there a way to get around this, because it’s annoying as all get out.
Not all the compile formats and converters support internal links and the Table of Contents feature. RTF compile should work, and PDF, DOC and DOCX work when compiled using the Microsoft Office converters, requiring MS Office 2007-2013. You can check which converters you’re using in the Import/Export section of Tools > Options. Click “Export Converters…” then select the format from the left drop-down menu. The current converter will be shown on the right; you can select a different option from that right menu. If Scrivener doesn’t detect a supported version of Word installed, some of those formats won’t be listed, as there won’t be multiple converters available.
These features are also dependent on the software you’re using to open the file. OpenOffice recognises the links but doesn’t support the page number linking at present. Word supports the page numbering, but you will see them in initially as ? characters. If you begin a print (you may be able to use Print Preview) or export to PDF, Word will calculate the page numbers and replace the question marks with the proper page numbers.
