I need to include some modified maps in a project which I might publish via the amazon DTP and I wonder what the copyright issues are concerning such map data. I found that it might be most easy technically to use OSM (open street map) data which are under CC share alike. Is it considered fair use internationally to modify these data and use them in a DTP book? Or what to do when using maps, including freely available GIS and map data? I actually happen to know how such things work with photographic images but concerning maps I sadly have no idea and would much appreciate any pointers and advice. Thanks very much!
