Randomly, and mostly in appropriately, Scrivener puts a green underline and will not clear it. It is supposed to be an indication of a grammar problem, but it is underlining peoples names, such as Edwards. The line goes away when I drop the ‘s’, but the name is appropriately with an ‘s’. I’ve done spell checks and that does not clear the green underline. I can’t find a way to add the correct spelling to the dictionary. How do I get Scrivener to stop this marking?
Yes, it could be wrong, but it isn’t. So how do I clear it so that the “checker” no longer flags it? It does the same for Clements, Effingham and other names and words.
What happens when you select the marked bad but good word, from the menu that is presented pick Spelling and Grammar → Show Spelling and Grammar use the buttons provided to, say, “Learn”, “Guess” or whatever?
When I follow that “path”, Learn / Guess is not an option. They are options if a word underlying is Red and I right click, but not if the line is dotted Green. Any other ideas?
I have double checked in the Manual and in Scrivener and no, there is no Learn for Spelling and Grammar from the drop downs in my installation 3.2.3. There is for underlines in Red, but not for underlines in Green.
Something else to consider, if you don’t find Apple’s grammar checker to be of much use in general, is to simply disable it. You can do so in the Edit ▸ Spelling and Grammar submenu.
rms, drmajorbob, AmberV: So I fixed the problem by finding a way to add the words that were causing a problem to the Apple dictionary. To do that I had to open the TextEdit app, open a new document (Command+N), type in the word, highlight it and then Command+Click to add it. Then I opened Scrivener and the highlighting had stopped. Thanks for your efforts to help.
Excellent … but I guess still a mystery why your version of Scrivener could not get access to that dictionary via Scrivener menu I pointed out. Guess a setting buried somewhere, or something. Oh well.
