Hello everyone. Will someone who’s “patient” at explaining help me understand how to transfer a scrivener file back and forth with my mac?
I usually write on a desktop at home, but I’d like to use my Mac more often. What are the steps and precautions to take so I don’t lose or write over a file?
For example, to start …
Create an empty file in Dropbox labeled with the name of my Scrivener Project.
Close the file on my home Mac completely.
Transfer/drop it into the Dropbox folder
Open my portable Macbook in another location and work on the file.
Your approach is too complicated. Best to read and understand about Dropbox syncing in the Scrivener Manual, Chapter 14. In particular, see page 349 for the section “Sync with Dropbox”. I’ll not repeat all those details here.
I assume your “desktop at home” is an Apple Mac, and that you have another computer that you call a “Mac”.
Ensure Dropbox installed and working on both machines. I put all my Scrivener projects in the folder ~/Dropbox/Scrivener. Follow Dropbox’s instructions to ensure your Scrivener folder is available offline Make your Dropbox files available offline | Dropbox Help.
Open Scrivener on one of the devices, open the project from the Dropbox folder, and do your work. Completely close the project and allow time for Dropbox to sync “up” to their server. Then on the other device, allow time for Dropbox to sync “down” to that other device. Then Open Scrivener on that other device and open the project from the Dropbox Folder. Do you work. Completely close the project in Scrivener and give Dropbox time to sync “up” to their server.
