Thought I’d give the 64-bit HiDPI version of RC8 another shot, see how it looks. This time, it installed just fine, starts up seemingly normally… And, then after about thirty seconds of a project being open, it either shuts itself down or crashes in some way that appears to be invisible to Windows.
Installing the standard version in 64-bit seems to solve the issue.
That could be caused by any number of things, but one that occurs often is a bug in your video driver that Scrivener or one of its 3rd party included tools is triggering.
Are you familiar with the Event Viewer in Windows? That often gives details about application crashes, so if you can pinpoint the time of the crash, then open the Event Viewer and go to Windows Logs / Application and scroll down to your time entry. You can filter the log to reduce scrolling. And if you have a high number of log events – in the thousands (typical) – you will have to wait 10-15 seconds at least for the log window to populate.
You could also make sure your video driver is up to date by checking your video card vendor’s web site.
Also make sure that you do not have an offline network printer, which causes ~30 sec startup delay reported from some users.
