Using Scrivener 2.9 on OS X 10.11.6. Trying to discover how to alter the default contact information on the First Page Header so that I don’t have to keep changing it and saving it (the info changed and there’s too much of it). It’s probably a simple click somewhere, I know, but various submenu titles have me flummoxed and I cannot find it. Thanks.
Once you create a project, the matter of fixing the title page is as simple as clicking on it in the binder and typing, so I presume you mean more how it gets that way in the first place.
Refer to §3.2.4, Use of System Contacts, in the user manual PDF, for where this information comes from and thus how to update it. Note there is also a tip for setting up a secondary address card for pseudonyms and such.
Yes, you’re correct. That is precisely what I wanted to know. “How does the contact information repeatedly appear in the template and how do I update or change it?” ought to have been my question. Thank you.
I’ve noticed I’m unable to replace any information in the original template, and any attempt to overwrite the original template results in another with a duplicate name.
Thank you for your helpful reply, especially with directions on where to find the information in the manual. That is most helpful!
The project templates themselves do not have this information, rather they have placeholders that ask the system for that information, like <$template_firstName>
.
That aside, it is true you cannot overwrite the built-in templates. It is better to give them a unique name so that it is easier to see which are yours.
I looked. The information in §3.2.4, Use of System Contacts tells of what is possible, but does not go far enough to instruct on how to make changes or updates to contact information. Furthermore, the section speaks of creating separate contact cards for pseudonyms, but does not detail how to create a separate contact card. Perhaps that exists elsewhere in the manual. I’ll be on the hunt for that.
This would not be something we document ourselves, as these are aspects of how Apple’s address book utility works. It’s been years since I used that older system you are on, but as I recall it should all be fairly straight-forward once you have your contact card pulled up, as they were still using visible buttons and to edit the card, and so forth. If it isn’t clear though, Contacts has a help menu.
Again this is going off of memory, but I think once you load Contacts, there should be a “Go” menu, which has a “My Card” command, or something along those lines.
Ah, there’s the rub. Scrivener doesn’t use an internal address card. Small wonder it can’t be found, then. Thank you!
Not in the older version! Back in the day it was standard to use your information in places where personal info might be useful, but they messed things up on more than one occasion which caused us to have to roll out fixes, so ultimately we did add a personal information panel to Scrivener’s preferences, in version 3.
Good to know! Glad to hear it, too. Looking forward to a new laptop soon to have the latest version of Scrivener. Thank you.
