How to exclude "enter" and "space" in characters counting?

If you select the text that you want to count, then go down to the footer of the editor and click where the counts are displayed you can see various counts including Characters (no spaces) and that also excludes returns.

You can’t change the live count on the footer though, the one that always shows.
