How to implement hierarchical numbering placeholders

I am working on a paper that is about 20 pages long. And wanted to use hierarchical numbering placeholders to create sections such as:

2.2.1

The description of how to use <$hn> is rather cryptic and even after spending an inordinate length of time have not gotten anywhere. Are there any examples of how this is done? I have searched the forum and the manual but not found anything that could guide me properly.

Is it dependent on creating nested folders? What is the secret sauce?

Yes. What other clue could Scrivener have to work with?

Yes, the <$hn> placeholder uses the Binder outline level to calculate the correct number.

The Enumerated Outline Compile Format supplied with Scrivener might be a good place to start experimenting. Section 24.2.4 in the manual also has a detailed example.

After giving it a rest that was my conclusion. Now I will experiment.

Thank you.
