I have ten essays as documents in a single folder that I am trying to compile into a PDF, with ten chapters. It’s looking pretty good, but I have some random blank pages between some but not all chapters. Can’t see any pattern to them. There are no rogue paragraph marks at the end of the previous chapter, and I have remove trailing white space turned on in compiler.
I’m using my own Project Format and New Page Heading and Text layout. I’m a long time user of Scriv, but newish to compiling.
The blank pages turned up after I finally managed to get the chapters to start on a new page, but I was trying lots of different things out so I can’t pin it down to one change.
Any ideas?

IIrc (Windows user) this can happen if you have Prevent Widows and Orphans turned on + Keep with Next all over your text (abuse of).
Another possibility is if you have the new chapters set to always start on a righthand page; that would insert a blank page when necessary to force the following chapter to be recto, but chapters that ended verso wouldn’t have the addition.
That’s set per section layout in the compile format designer under the New Pages tab.

I do have prevent widows and orphans ticked, but don’t use Keep with Next (and don’t know what that is)
they are not ticked. Is there anywhere else that might be in play?
Nothing leaps to mind there; even if you had inserted page breaks at the end of the chapters within the editor, they wouldn’t double up with ones from the compile separators when remove trailing whitespace is ticked. Do you have footnotes or endnotes in the compiled document?
You said there wasn’t a discernible pattern to the pages being added, but there would be if it was something like the forced recto. Did you check that? If the chapters are starting sometimes lefthand and sometimes righthand, the cause is probably something else.

did you have some spacing, so that your chapters wouldn’t be right after one another?
If so, what did you use, how did you do it?

A list of those, as much as you can recall, would certainly help.
⮚ If one of those attempts pertained to a section layout’s suffix, you should go and make sure it (the suffix tab) is perfectly cleaned-up.

turns out recto was turned on. So weird, because I checked that multiple times, including before I started this post. No idea what happened there.
