Hi, is there a way to retrieve lost text/documents in a project? I have it set on auto backup and save before I log out every time. However, when I opened it this morning, 30,000 words are missing! (These are words and documents that have been there each time for weeks.) I’ve checked every file on my Scrivener and in the backup. Some of the missing documents are there, but when I open them, they are blank. I’ve also checked the Trash file - nothing there.
Please help!!
What if open 1 or 2 day old backup does that restore most of the novel?
Thanks, GoalieDad. My daughter was just able to get a backup from several days ago to open. The instructions she found say to archive the damaged file and make the backup the live one, but I’m not finding how to do that. Can you point me in the right direction for that?
Sure two ways.
- File> save as and name something like emergency backup. This will put preserved copy aside. You should do the same for file with error and label project name with error ( or similar) might at most now lose 1 or 2-3 thousand words depending on how quick are writing. When actively writing , I backup every day and have project in options under backup set to backup on close. Also if look in general settings in option is to set the program to close are set time of inactivity such as 5 hours. If doing cloud backup suggest to be cautious to do zipped backups.
Please use the File → Backup → Backup To command for this.
The reason is that the Save As command creates a duplicate of the project, then continues working in the duplicate. It’s a common cause of “lost” work, when the person then opens the original and discovers that all the work they did in the duplicate is “missing.”
Thank you, kewms and GoalieDad. Not sure if I followed a perfect process, but I saved the full ms using the backup to command and then ended up deleting the damaged file because it kept defaulting to that one being the live version. Seems to be working fine with the good version now. Thank you both for your help!!
