How to use different font sizes for editing and printing?

Sorry if this is a boneheaded question. I am new to Scrivener and I can’t figure this out.

I want to use a larger font for onscreen editing (e.g., 14 pt), and a smaller font for printing from Scrivener (e.g., 10 pt).

It appears that the default fonts selections established in Preferences are used for both editing and printing.

I’ll be very happy with a “View 125%” kind of solution that magnifies/scales the text in the editor, but Scrivener doesn’t seem to have this option.

How can I use different font sizes for editing and printing, with a minimum of fuss? In lieu of scaling the font in the editor, I’d like to use different profiles for editing and printing–manually changing the font in the editor prior to printing is not a good solution.

Many thanks.

Scrivener gives you both options you’re looking for. To set the font size (and all formatting options) for editing, use the Preferences>Text Editing window. That only affects what you see when you’re working in Scrivener. To change your print or compile settings, go to File>Compile Draft>Formatting. Part of the beauty of Scrivener is that it enables you to use whatever settings you like for the actual writing without having to worry about manually changing everything before you compile your manuscript, so don’t be afraid to set up your workspace with whatever font size you want!

Additionally, you can simply zoom the text in the editor by going to View>Editor>Zoom In/Out, using the keyboard shortcut opt+cmd+up/down, or via the toolbar option in the Editor’s footer. Each editor acts independently of the other, so make sure you’re focused in the one you want to change.

If you haven’t had a chance, definitely take the time to go through the Tutorial project included with Scrivener. It takes you through a lot of the program’s features (though not nearly all, as there are so many!) and really helps get you comfortable working with the interface.

Hope that helps,

MM

Hi,

As MimeticMouton says, please do take time to go through the tutorial, and also see the Compiling the Draft section of the Help file. The editor can be scaled, but also, compiling for export using a different font is one of the main features of Scrivener, so it’s worth getting familiar with the main features.

All the best,
Keith

D’oh ( as they say). Many thanks for your help. I did review the tutorials, but it’s clear I need a remedial. I’m really enjoying using Scrivener. Thanks again.
