Dear all,
I have been using Scrivener in English for my PhD thesis, which I am still writing, but I wanted to start writing short stories in Japanese.
Japanese short stories are written vertically and from right to left, which is something that Microsoft Word allows, but I love Scrivener, and I was wondering if there is a way to write Japanese literature in it, as I haven’t been able to find it.
Thank you,
Minerva
You don’t say if you’re on Windows or Mac. If you’re on Mac you can do it — I’m not at my computer at the moment so can’t remember where the switch is, though it’s straightforward — but be aware that is a project-level switch or maybe even app-level, so you can’t mix vertical and horizontal in a single project.
The necessary API is provided by Apple so I’m not sure if it’s
available in the Windows version.
Disclaimer: I’ve only used it for Chinese, so I don’t know about how Japanese behaves with it.

PS View → Text Editing → Use Vertical Layout; project-level, not app-level.
Two edits: one to add the PS, one to make a correction about the API.
