Hi there,
I have just purchased and downloaded Scrivener and am trying to start my first project, but it won’t let me create one. I’ve tried saving in different folders and desktop, but it simply says it cannot create a project in that location. I am running Leopard.
Help!
Cheers,
Suzanne
Leopard here too, never faced anything like that.
Try the exclusion method (you exclude possible sources of your trouble one by one and then, finally, you might get the real bugger):
– Try to save a TextEdit file (or anything else) in exactly the same place where you wanted to save the Scrivener file. Does that work? If not, you’re not facing a Scrivener problem at all.
– Does your trouble with Scrivener occur post-registering or can’t you tell because you never successfully used the unregistred try-out version before?
– A friend I recommended Scrivener to was very satisfied with it until the day he found out about different user accounts in Mac OS (he started with computers just a year ago), played around with them a little bit and then he had problems with opening Scrivener files. As far as I remember anyone reporting similar problems in this forum had more than one account on his machine. Are you the only user of your Mac, Suzanne? Do you have more than one account (like “admin” and “suzanne”)?
These are just my suggestions to start the investigation. Beside from that: Stay cool, I can assure you you won’t regret buying Scrivener.
Are you trying to run Scrivener from the virtual disk on your desktop, or have you copied it over into your Applications folder. Make sure it’s in the latter location and run it from there.

Hi Suzanne
Try
Utilities folder > Disk Utility > Repair Disk Permissions.
Thanks for the replies. I have been through the suggestions:
-I am the only user
-It is definitely running from applications
-I’ve tried saving a word document to the same place and there is no problem
-I have run disk repair permissons.
I’m pretty sure that the registration has gone through (but not 100% as I don’t know how to check this).
NO LUCK. What is also happening is that even though when it tells me that it can’t create the project and I press cancel as I can’t proceed, it does go ahead and create it in that place but as a read-only file.
I am wondering if I do have a systems problem as I’m having problems with getting another third party application (Novamind) up and running too , and something seems to be wrong with my address book.
It is frustrating as I am DYING to use Scrivener. Any other suggestions gratefully received. I’ll also try the MAC helpline this morning.
Cheers,
Suzanne
That definitely does sound suspiciously like a freaky system problem. Repair permissions doesn’t check user document areas and so forth, so there might be something weird going on in your Documents folder that it wouldn’t detect. I wonder if NovaMind is using Bundles for its document format, too? Try right clicking on a NovaMind project and see if it says, “Show Package Contents.” That might be a clue, if it is.
Another thing to try is Cmd-I to get info on the troublesome Scrivener project, and then expand the “Sharing & Permissions” section. You should see your name at the top with “Read & Write”. Then right click on the project, choose Show Package Contents, and do the same thing for anything you see in there. Just Cmd-I and check to make sure you have Read & Write set.
Hi,
Could you please give me the exact message you are receiving when you try to create a new project?
To me, it sounds as though your disk is causing permissions problems that aren’t allowing all the contents of the files to be created properly. Have you tried repairing your disk permissions?
Best,
Keith
It might also be really helpful to run Disk Warrior to clean up any corrupt directory stuff.
DW often fixes strange events of this kind.
Thank you everybody for your suggestions. My problem turned out to be with my system. I had Leopard reinstalled and have just opened my first project so I am up and running.
Cheers,
Suzanne
Phew! Glad you got everything sorted out - thanks for letting us know (so that it’s one less potential bug I have to worry about ).
Best,
Keith
