I don’t understand spell checking in iOS...

L.S.,

In my Windows version of Scrivener the spell checker works great, but in iOS it’s a pain in the ass.

First it didn’t show any red underlinings at all. After fiddling around with it in the settings (I seriously don’t know what action of mine made the difference…) now it spell checks for all new words as I type them. NOT the words that are already in the document. However. If I close the document (or open an existing document), all the red underlinings are gone. As if the spell checker has accepted them as a ‘learned word’ I read so much about. When I restart typing, the NEW words are spell-checked once more. What’s going on here? I use the iOS version mainly for checking final drafts, so the spell checker is of utmost importance.

FYI I write in Dutch

Kind regards

Anybody? It rather surprises me that I can’t find anything about this issue. Neither my iPhone nor my iPad mark the incorrect words.

Did you tick
Settings -> General -> Keyboard -> Check spelling
on your iDevice?

Yes, I did. But it only checks the new words as I type them. And that’s no good for editing afterwards, because when I close and reopen a document all corrections are gone.

I’m sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but the functionality you’re looking for (block spell checking) doesn’t seem to exist in iOS. Google Docs doesn’t have it, nor do Pages,Notes, or Ulysses. All you get is checking as you type. I can’t check Microsoft Word because I don’t use it, but even if MS Word has block spell cheking, I’ll wager that Microsoft built the capability itself. It doesn’t seem to be a capability provided with iOS, and none of the text apps I’ve installed have anything like it. :frowning:

Thank you, Silverdragon! I’d rather have you clearing this up than let me spend more time on this unsolvable problem. A bit strange though that I’ve read on other threads about people emphasizing the importance of editing afterwards. Obviously that is impossible when the corrections disappear after closing and reopening a document. But this must have been about Scrivener for Windows/Mac, not iOS.
Would be nice if Scrivener could find a way around this, but I guess that if it’s iOS-related it will be here to stay.

Without deliberately changing my settings, Scrivener on my iPad is spellchecking in English again. Since I write in Dutch every word I type is suddenly underlined once more. I remember this to be the case over a year ago, before I tried something with the keyboard settings in iOS (I’ve understood that this spell check has to do with the iOS settings rather than with a setting within Scrivener). It wasn’t this way last week. Any idea how to go back to checking Dutch spelling? I’m using the iPad smart keyboard (hardware keyboard) by the way. Thanks beforehand for your reply.

The problem seems to have gone after tapping the globe-button on my iPad Smart Keyboard, till the Dutch language is selected.

P.S. Not really Scrivener related, but it caused some confusion: when you’ve added keyboards (languages) to iOS, they are represented in hardware keyboards. On the right of these keyboards, there’s another language selection, e.g. English - Dutch. This seems to have to do with the keyboard layout, not with the spell check

The spell checking is pretty much junk. I have had the same problem, with no updates on my post. I sent a note to tech support, and have got nothing back. To be honest, a word processor that doesn’t spell check properly is kind of useless.

If you install the Grammarly keyboard it can check the text afterwards.

No luck. I can type junk, doesn’t correct. Doesn’t show anything after the fact.

Okay, I’ve figured this out. If I’m using my bluetooth keyboard, I don’t get it as I go. But I can scan the document afterwards by turning off my bluetooth keyboard. That works. Thanks kindly for the help.
