Hi there.
I am very new to Scrivener. I have managed to import my manuscript and have been working on the individual chapters all day, but none of my edits are there in the original document.
What am I doing wrong and how can I fix it?
I hope you can help!!
Thank you
I’m not sure if I understand you – I’m guessing that you mean you expected Scrivener to work rather in the manner of one word processor opening a document created in another one (say, taking a document created in MS Word and opening it in Nisus Writer Pro). But Scrivener doesn’t work that way at all. If you import a document into Scrivener it is converted into a number of files that are all saved inside the Scrivener project. The original document is left untouched. Any edits you make are to the document(s) held inside the Scrivener project. You can create a new (single) document with all the edits that you can open in a word processor by using the Compile function.

Hi M, that’s very clear and I understand.
Thank you for your help.
There are a few things about Scrivener that are “different” and worth knowing about. One is that a Scrivener “file” (the thing with a filename that ends in .scriv) is not a file at all, but actually a kind of folder called a package. If you control-click on its icon in the Finder, you will get a contextual menu that offers “Show Package Contents”. If you look at that, you will see how complex the inside of a Scrivener project is. But don’t mess around with it. It is normally hidden for a reason. And it is one of the reasons why working with iCloud is presently not possible, and working with Dropbox has to be approached with a little care, though it works perfectly well if you follow the guidelines posted on the forum.
Cheers, Martin.
