I am very happy with Scrivener but there is one thing that really bugs me:
In the compile window, when doing the page setup, there is no way to switch from inches to cm.
It is possible to switch the Margins window to cm, which will also show the page settings in the overview in cm, but if you open the page setup again, it will still only show inch values, so if you want an exact cm value you have to input inch values and then check on the previous page that shows you the cm to see if it is close enough. If you didn’t get it quite right, you will have to open the page settings once more and try another inch value. This makes it IMPOSSIBLE to get exact cm values.
(There is an inch to cm switch in the options but that one is only for the rulers)
TL;DR version: Please add a switch from inches to cm in the page setup window, it is really sorely missing.
Unfortunately that doesn’t help. I don’t have an option for custom sizes in the page setup, and the last time I needed this, I needed to input specific (non-standard) values for a book printing service for my PDF. Also, when chosing one of the european paper sizes in the page setup and choosing “use project page settings”, the resulting size is not EXACTLY the right size. I assume the correct cm values get converted into inches under the hood and get rounded in the process. The Margins window has a drop-down that changes it to cm, it would be great if the page setup window had this, too.
If windows, the list of page options is so long have to scroll a little bit to get to custom option, is off the screen when first start and the scroll instead of being on the side is at bottom of list and easily missed.
3.1.2.0 on Windows 10.
Unfortunately, there is only a short list of formats and there is no custom option. (I did a screenshot demonstrating but the forum says I can’t embed media )
There is no scroll option and going up and down with the arrow keys reveals no further options.
I was talking about the File-> Page Setup dialogue you recommend I use, that one has only 12 entries on my system and no custom option and no further options, so it’s useless for me (and apparently also gets converted to inches and rounded under the hood)
The other dialogue which HAS the custom option and which I was already using to approximate the printing format I needed is the one that is missing an inch/cm switch. That’s the one I mean.
Like I said, the margins window has a dropdown-menu, this dialogue also should have one.
But remember if you are going to share your work, then you will use the compile function to export a document and there at the bottom of the huge list of page setup options is a custom setup that essentially can be metric as the english inches can be adjusted to any size to fit metric as long as do conversion.
Who cares (not trying to be mean just factual) what it is in Scrivener as you work. It is only for your visual pleasure and has nothing to do with the final product.
The one in the compile settings is exactly the problem, I don’t care what it is in Scrivener while writing. I can convert cm to inches manually, but it won’t be exact. Also, it is an unnecessary inconvenience.
Some of the paper sizes are weird for example B8 is 2.44 inches by 3.46 which is 62 mm by 88 mm. Look up paper sizes for what you want suspect though all settings are in inches some are converted from metric sizes.
If you click on “Margins” rather than “Page Setup” you can select cm or inches. By doing so, the page size measures will be shown in cm as well. However, it seems like its only a conversion because you still manually have to write the page size in inches.
