Improved ways to get items into Collections

Hi AmberV -

Yes, as mentioned in a previous post, I did create test projects and the same thing happened in all of them. It seems to be an app-wide problem.

Thanks for the explanation of the funky numbers. No problem. Plain Text syncing is really sweet.

Re the back-and-forth about placement order in collections, I do now get it. Apologies if I’ve been slow, but I guess the discussion may be useful for others wondering along the same lines. To summarise, collections can be used for many purposes - that’s their beauty. Some of these will require free ordering, others will need to follow the binder order. For example, a collection where you want to try out different ways of ordering your material will need to be free. But collections following specific characters, subplots, timelines or whatever within the overall project, will usually need to follow the binder order (disaster is likely to ensue if not). You have therefore opted to make free the default and encourage users to create saved keyword searches and the like (smart collections, kind of) for the rest, rather than providing an optional, cross-the-board follow-the-binder alternative.

I do now see the logic of that, though at first sight it looked somewhat arbitrary. In fact it is a good deal more flexible, though it involves a bit more messing about to set things up. So, I’ll now get to work trying it out!

Thanks for the patience and hoping it’ll be possible to throw some light on the menu item issue,

Malcolm

Does the menu issue happen with all projects, or just with one project? If the latter, would it be possible to zip it up and send it to me?
Thanks,
Keith

Curioser and curioser. I’ve just created a Templates folder, and its contents aren’t showing up in Project/New From Template menu item either.

The other menu issue was happening in all projects, not just the one. I’ve created a sample project in which both these menu problems appear, and would propose sending that to you rather than the large one I’m working on. Would that work?

Btw, the build I’m working with is the special one you created to remove the double-doc launching problem. I don’t know if that has anything to do with anything - I don’t see why it should. But if the current public build incorporates that, maybe I should try downloading it to see if these problems persist. I suppose it’s conceivable it’s something in the copy I downloaded.

Cheers,

Malcolm

I’ve just emailed a sample project plus a couple of screenshots. Sent them to the Support email address. Hope this helps.

Oh hang on, is the build you are using one of the builds I posted for testing, or the on that fixed things? It could be that I removed some stuff for testing, such as the app delegate methods that would deal with creating dynamic methods. Try this build:

literatureandlatte.com/downl … STest3.zip

Thanks,
Keith

Phew! That did it. Panic over, both issues gone. Thanks.

And I have to say that you and AmberV were absolutely right about my collections placement beef. I’ve now got to grips with Saved Searches, Templates and such, and they do just what I was griping about - and without any real effort at all. Bootiful. I should have delved into the manual more. So, apols and kudos once again.

Cheers and best,

Malcolm

Glad that did the trick and it wasn’t anything more serious! Glad collections are starting to make sense, too - sorry my own answers are all rather short; I’m leaving Ioa in charge of longer explanations at the moment while I try to get through what seems like a billion bug-fixes.
Thanks,
Keith

Totally understood - life must be a tad full at the moment! Hope the thought of all us grateful, if sometimes pestiferous, users makes it easier…

I think it would be useful if you could right click an item in the binder and one of the choices was “Add to Collection” and then you could select the collection.

There already is a menu command for this in the Documents menu, “Add to Collection”.

I understand it’s in the documents menu.

I’ve added it to the ctrl-click menu for the binder in 2.0.3, as I think that’s a nice idea.
