Thanks very much. Obviously this would not be possible without Keith’s work, and decision to allow the sync with Index Card. Enjoy your iPad!
I think you’ll find that the fields that exist in both apps will match up when trading documents between the two apps. Meaning Title ↔ Title, and Synopsis ↔ Synopsis.
I’ve been cleared to let you know that the ability to synch with Scrivener 2.0 is already in the Index Card v1.4 release. So as soon as you get your hands on it, you’ll be set to trade projects.
Again many thanks to Keith for working with me on this.
Index Card for iPad v2 was recently released. It’s a free update for existing users, and only $4.99 for newbies. Several new features, addressing top user requests.
[]Stacks: Group cards together under a single heading. On the corkboard, stacked cards appear under a single binder clip icon (similar to iOS 4 Folders). In outline view, a blue heading row identifies the stack beginning and end, with associated cards indented as sub-items in the hierarchy.[/]
[]Custom label names: Customize the text associated with each label color (e.g. Green is “Protagonist”).[/]
[]Notes Export: Optionally include card notes when exporting your project.[/]
[]Notes Indicator: The Flip-to-back button displays blue when editing a card that has text in the notes field[/]
[]Notes Text Field Focus: The Notes text field is now ready for typing when you flip a card over. You no longer need to tap the back of the card for the cursor and keyboard to appear.[/]
[]Quicker Scrolling: The corkboard now scrolls faster when rearranging cards.[/]
[]Auto save: Index Card now performs auto save of your projects more frequently.[/]
One additional thing I’d like to highlight is the way stacks are displayed in outline view. I think users will find the stack end indicator pretty innovative. It allows you to fully utilize iPad gestures to drag cards in and out of stacks when viewing their project as an outline. Other outline implementations on the iPad require users to tap buttons to move items in the hierarchy, or won’t allow sub-items to be dropped in as the last item of a group. This is because other apps can’t tell if an item is meant to be the last row in the heading above or the first row in the heading below.
I hope you find the investment I’ve continue to make to the app useful. You can see updated screen shots on the app web page.
PS - Sync with Scrivener should continue to work as before (e.g. card title, synopsis, and order). If you have stacks in Index Card, they will not be recognized by Scrivener, but your cards and their order should be properly maintained.
Very nice! Stacks really help with limited screen space. Scrivener maintains the collection ‘flat’ view, changing the order as needed. Now if Scrivener could also sync the ‘hierarchy.’
I know my brain parts are not interconnected in a proper way and I know noone will like this suggestion because there are likely many good reasons against it but:
what if Index Cards would sync what is in the synopsis field with scrivener synopsis and the notes with the actual scrivener text?
I am just asking, what if. it is not an offense, both programs are great. just consider it (maybe write the notes together with synopsis and and the actual text in the notes field as a workaround for then wrongly named fields, on the pluss side there would be sync…Oh yeahh I know I wrote it in the first sentence of the posting already).
Index Card recently added the ability to export the notes from the back of the index card into the .indexcard file, so this is down to Scrivener now - it’s on my list for 2.0.5 or 2.0.6 to look at this. Obviously the notes on the back of the cards are plain text and Scrivener is rich text, so you may lose formatting, but I already have code in place to handle that for Simplenote and external folder sync which I’ll reuse. So this should be coming to Scrivener in the next few months.
Woo Hoo, three cheers for wonderful software developers working together. Now that Index Card has stacks, and Scrivener can sync notes, we are getting closer to true convergence. Any chance Scrivener will be able to sync Index Card stacks? Denvogal, any chance Index Card will get nested stacks? Taken together that will go a long way toward Index Card working as a stripped down scrivener for the iPad.
No, sorry. They are rather different to folders in Scrivener, and there are no plans for full folder sync to any external program at the moment because of the pitfalls involved. Index Card sync is already rather cool though.
Been using Scrivener for almost a year now and absolutely LOVE this program. The sheer number of ways you can configure it to suit your work flow is astounding and a rather nice object lesson for other developers, too.
Now to my question/feature request: I recently started using Index Card on my iPad in conjunction with Scrivener and wanted to know if there is a convenient way to sync (import and export) my Document Notes with Index Card. If not, what would be great is if I could choose from Scrivener’s “sync with Index Card for iPad…” to sync my Document Notes to/from the backside of the Index Card rather than my main document text. This option could be another checkbox that when selected would gray out the items related to the main document text.
I use Scrivener’s Document Notes to capture all manner of useful meta info regarding my actual main documents, some of which are already WIP and others yet to be written. Being able to replicate that workflow seamlessly between Scrivener and Index Card would be quite helpful!
Right now, I think you will find that the Index Card Notes field syncs with Scrivener Text Field. There is not a Text field in Index Card right now, but I am considering it for a future release. This would free up Notes field in Index Card to sync with Notes Scrivener field. Keith is aware, and we are discussing how the various fields should sync between programs moving forward. Thanks for your interest.
Thanks for the quick response! What you propose would be the ideal and just the fact that you and Keith are discussing ways in which to further align the programs is great. I’ll keep my fingers crossed.
@DenVogel
1st - Index Card is a fantastic App. Congrats!
2nd - It’s clear to me on sync text form a previously created project in Scrivener to Index Card.
The thing that it’s not clear is:
“What if I create a new project in Index Card and I want it on Scrivener?”
A. Should I create a new Scriv proj. with the same number of cards in Scriv and sync all the stuff?
B. What happens to the Stacks?
… or I’m grumpy and goofy man that is not able to find this information somewhere?
Thanks a lot for your answer
I wanted to let you know about a new feature that should greatly improve the Scrivener to Index Card workflow. Copy from Dropbox will allow you to browse the project files in your IndexCard folder and select which ones you want to import, all without leaving the Index Card app. You no longer need to switch to the Dropbox app, or even install Dropbox on your device, to get your Scrivener exports into Index Card.
Index Card v3.1 is available now, and is a free update for existing users.
