They are both identical in features. The Mac App Store one can only be used on Snow Leopard and above, though, whereas our regular version can be used on Tiger and above, so if you have any computers running anything lower than 10.6, you will want to buy the regular version. Other than that, the only difference is how you receive updates and register your copy. If you buy from the App Store you download updates from there, too, and Apple handle validating your copy. If you buy from us you receive a serial number and get notified of updates if there are any available when you launch the program.
If you’re only going to be using it on Snow Leopard or above, then it really just comes down to whether you prefer to buy from the Mac App Store or not.
If you’re using the trial version the Mac App Store may detect Scrivener as being “installed”, so before you buy, move your existing copy of Scrivener to the Trash. That way the Mac App Store transaction should go smoothly.
Just to make the point clear, the version you buy from the Literature and Latte website supports Snow Leopard in addition to a couple of older versions of Mac OS X. So no matter which version you buy, if you are running Snow Leopard, you’re running the “right” version of Scrivener.
Sort of the same question here for me – should I get Scrivener through the AppStore or the “traditional” way…
The most important thing for me is about downloading updates: if I buy from the AppStore, do I have to start the AppStore-app for updating Scrivener every time or will I be able to use the automatic updates feature within Scrivener so it updates itself?
Actually I tend to buy from Literature&Latte directly, it’s just that there is no review of Scrivener in the Swiss AppStore yet, which is a pity for such a great app…
If you buy from the App Store then yes, you need to update via the App Store, because Apple don’t allow applications to use their own update systems; if you buy direct then you get update notifications when you open Scrivener.
That said, I’m hoping that as of the next version of Scrivener, App Store customers will be able to download and user the regular version too - that is, the regular download of Scrivener 2.1 should recognise a valid App Store licence provided you have run the App Store version at least once. I can’t say for sure until 2.1 has been accepted at the App Store, though, and I won’t be submitting it for a couple more weeks.
Thanks for wanting to write a nice review, though, much appreciated! (Oh, and thanks for wanting to buy too.)
thank you very much replying so quickly to my question. (my answer hasn’t been that fast…) Just wanted to inform you that in the end I’ve purchased Scrivener from the AppStore. While I thought it would be nice to give more of my money to the developers directly, it was only through the AppStore I’ve heard about Scrivener for the first time, so I liked to write a review there.
Many thanks for buying! And a review on the Mac App Store is always appreciated (well, so long as it’s a good one of course ), so thank you for taking the time to do that too.
