This is probably a dumb question, but I am stumped. I cannot use italics while editing text. If I go up to the Text menu and toggle Fonts, the Italic choice is light gray and unavailable. Did I somehow turn it off? Can I restore the Italic function?

Not all fonts support italics (i.e. they don’t have an italic version).
Try changing your font to one of the more common ones.
Thank you SOOOO much! That was the problem, and the solution never would have occurred to me. 
I wouldn’t be too worried… wouldn’t have occurred to me either, except it has been mentioned before by someone else
