I have a project with 113 items in it. For the last 3 weeks or so, I’ll delete a line in a file, any file, and the text will double before being deleted. Yesterday, text stretched before being deleted, and today all the files in the project would not display text when a file was selected. I restored from backup and all is well, but what happened?
What version of Scrivener do you have, and with which version of OS X?
Are you using a “cloud” service, such as Dropbox?
Are you editing in the normal editor view, or in Page View? With or without typewriter scrolling? There can sometimes be visual artifacts as Scrivener redraws the screen. (This might explain the line doubling effect, but not the empty files issue.)

I’m using Scrivener 2.8.1 and OS X Sierra 10.12.6 beta (16G12b) and Dropbox.
I’m using the normal editor viewing & no typewriter scrolling.
The empty files issue is a common symptom of incomplete Dropbox synchronization, for instance if the master index file for the project has been synchronized but the underlying text files have not.
Do you have access to a non-beta copy of Mac OS? We haven’t seen other reports of the display anomalies you describe, so I’d want to eliminate beta weirdness as a possible cause.

I can only anecdotally say non-beta macOS did not do this as I can’t at this time revert.
I neglected to say thank your for your efforts. Dropbox always hits my system hard. I’m sure you nailed it.
