[JH] BUG? - Scrivener failed importing the URL

Hi,

I’m actually using Version 2.9.0.28 and I can’t import into my research folder any URL.

Tested with different pages (even very old, just good, simple HTML) and using the last versions of Firefox, Chromium and Opera.

Every time I try, no matter if via drag&drop or regular import, a little window pops out, saying:

Previous versions do the same.

Are you able to add a link to a webpage into the project or document bookmarks in the inspector, either by drag and drop or choosing “External Bookmark” from the “…” button and typing a URL? Does the page load in the inspector preview area as expected? Since you’ve had this problem with previous builds, it seems unlikely to be an issue with a problem file in the installation, although that could be the case if you’ve just been using the updater rather than uninstalling and then running the full installer. If you haven’t tried a fresh install, it’s worth giving that a shot just to rule it out as a problem. Are you installing and running Scrivener from a standard user account or as an administrator?

Yes, this way works.

I’ve always installed ex-novo.

Running as standard user.

Thanks for the replies. Is Scrivener installed then to a “Scrivener” folder within your user Documents folder?

Sorry, no.

Actual path of the .exe file is:

C:\Program Files\Scrivener\Scrivener.exe

Hi, I’m a long time user of Windows v.1 and updates. Trying out the beta now and noting that dragging the URL “lock” symbol at left in any tabs URL space into Scriv 3 beta v. 8 doesn’t work.
The dialog will sit there with a 25% complete green progress bar, then it disappears. It does create a folder with the name of the site (i.e. www.literatureandlatte.com) but that’s all. The blank page has a broken icon and the msg:

Your file was not found
It may have been moved or deleted.
ERR_FILE_NOT_FOUND

I can of course copy/paste the URL into a text file in the RESEARCH section which works as a link .
Sorry, new to the process…I did look up earlier post on this issue but I didn’t understand the exchange between moderator and user.

thanks

writer, Scriv user since the first Windows release

Hi Jim, Do you encounter the same problem if you select the Research folder in the binder, then use File > Import > Web Page…? If I’m understanding correctly, it sounds like the issue is that download process and not the drag and drop, but it would be good to eliminate it and be sure.

Could you also try opening the inspector in your project and switching to the Bookmarks tab (if the Research folder is still selected in the binder, Project Bookmarks will be the only pane available in the inspector, so that’s fine) and try dragging and dropping the webpage from your browser to the top section there? Rather than importing the file, this just provides a link that can be loaded in the area below. Does that work?

Which version of Windows are you on (you can type “winver” in the search bar and run winver.exe to check this) and what internet browser are you using?

Hi chaps, …

Crashed out the Scrivener beta 3 (Version: 2.9.9.11 Beta (1078406) 64-bit - 14 Oct 2020) tonight, looked for a similar issue, and found this report.

OS Win 10 Pro. ver 2004

In Scrivener: on the [Research] TAB, - {Right Click} → ADD → Web Page:
In the popup, put (your/this) web sites address, …

One of two things happens,
The program fails to respond and you have to close it.
OR – after several long agonizing minutes (with the progress bar appearing to be stuck), the web site eventually appears in a flash!

Grapping the web-address with a mouse out of a browser, and then dropping it on the Research TAB does the same long winded thing.

Not sure if this has been mentioned before, can’t find it if it has.
And if it has, … then I’m sorry to bother you with it.

I will say before I go, that I’m buying this program when it becomes available, WOW! - I’ve been paying with it for a while, just WOW!

Well done, … rgds.
