I love simple mind pro can link to different areas of mind map and hide text info for any topic to keep the mindmap cleaner and can change how the interface works. Has a free trial and if want is only a one time fee.
I use XMind for rigorous mind mapping.
For drafting in writing, the parts that are written and then deleted, I use Project-Graph, as it is very free and it’s especially easy to create and delete nodes. It can also be overlaid on Scrivener fullscreen mode with transparent background.
I used to use Heimer on Linux. It’s fairly similar to Scapple from what I remember and is available for Windows as well.
I have a couple of whiteboards mounted to the wall. Nothing beats the freedom to diagram any way I want, free of software constraints. I’ll then snap photos of anything I might want to review later. The analog approach is not for everybody, but for me, it’s perfect.
For me, it’s a pad of grid paper and sticky notes.
I do also use Scapple.
