L&L New Product?

Sounds more like it’s turned into the vaporware of the 90s to me.

What does? This?:

As a beta tester, I can assure you: If ████████ is vaporware, then writing is taking a sauna.

I can’t remember now - months, maybe a year. The situation with the new software is a little different. We called for beta testers at the end of 2023, but it was ready for beta testing on only macOS and iOS during 2024. The Windows version took longer to get ready than we’d hoped, and that didn’t enter beta testing until 2025. And all along the plan was to release on Windows and Mac at the same time, to avoid a release that was marred by disappointment from our Windows users.

Around the time the Windows version went into beta testing - just as I thought the macOS and iOS versions were complete - Apple announced Liquid Glass, which changed everything. On macOS the app was using a custom UI that was broken by Glass; on iOS we were using a custom inspector that could now be switched to using the new iOS 26 inspector. This involved UI rewrites on both Apple platforms, which took about three months, maybe more.

At the same time, the Glass updates required serious updates to our existing software. We got a Glass update to Scrivener for macOS out, but Scrivener for iOS has been waiting too long without an update, and that’s what I’ve been working on since WWDC this year and is my current priority. Users of existing apps have to be put before releasing a new app.

The new app is now ready to go on all platforms, save some iOS/macOS 27 bug fixes, but we can’t start on the release until we have the Scrivener macOS/iOS 27 updates out. And then, with all the copy and images we have to put together for the release, 2026 is going to be up, so realistically we aren’t going to be releasing the new app until 2027.

But that actually works out well, since 2027 is the 20th anniversary of Scrivener.

And that’s absolutely fine. Scrivener remains our flagship app so even if we never released our new app, who does that affect, really? We posted one blog post about it to enlist beta testers, and otherwise have kept quiet about it except to answer the occasional question, as now. It’s not like we are talking it up week after week. It is flattering that so many users read that one blog post and are still eager to hear more about it.

We will say more when we have all the release materials ready and have a solid release date.

13 posts were split to a new topic: File managers on different platforms

That is ambivalent and covering your bases.

As a software developer myself, I actually agree :joy:

Is there any possibility of an additional beta user/tester? I’m a long time software developer (including Apple ecoosystem) so I’d be happy to give feedback from a developer’s point of view.

It sounds as if it’s pretty much done aside from the marketing.

Not sure if outside developer feedback at this stage will do anything except delay it further.
