Hi,

I just found out about Scrivener and played around with SG, and I must say, I am deeply impressed. Not only by SG, the application, but also by you, the creator of that software, and how many thoughts you put into the development of Scrivener 1.0! I wish every software company would do so, but I doubt it, looking at many products out there … (did I hear Adobe? Microsoft? Arrrg …) :unamused:

Anyway, I have a wish :slight_smile:
I doubt it’s your prime concern, but I would like to see and use Scrivener 1.0 in my native language (german). So, do you have any plans of letting the GUI of the application translated?
I also offer help for the german localisation, as good as I can do. As a PR-journalist, I’m pretty sensitive to language, as a Mac-User since 10 years, I’m familiar with the words the menu items etc. should have on a native Mac program. That’s what I can offer. What I don’t have are any programming skills, but I don’t know if they are needed for localisation.

So, if I can be of any help, feel free to contact me :slight_smile:

Hello Sebastian, and thank you for kind words about Scrivener.

I would absolutely love to localise Scrivener for other languages, though I won’t think about it until 1.0 is finalised (to ensure that all of the menus and text won’t get changed after localisation). You don’t need any programming skills to localise a program - I believe that I can just send you an XML file with all of the phrases that need localising. That said, I haven’t done it before, so I will have to look into it when the time comes - it won’t be for a while yet. Thank you very much for volunteering, though, I really appreciate it.

Keith, whenever you are ready to localize, I’d be more than happy to help with the localization to Spanish. I believe that Blue-Tec has a localizer that could be used.

If localization does indeed require ZERO programming skills I’d be happy to do the french version. Let me know.

Keith, I volunteer to do a Dutch translation. That, to me, seems only fair since I have been able to use this fantastic application for free for quite a while now.

Let me tell you, it was exactly what I had been looking for, for such a long time. I have tried all the other apps, none suited my needs, unfortunately, and I was about to learn xcoding myself. And then, one day, I found Scrivener. Now I have to stop procrastinating and start writing… No more excuses now.

BTW, the fact that Scrivener is so difficult to find would be my only complaint. I have googled all over the WWW for writer’s tools and what have you, but Scrivener is definitely well hidden. You can imagine my scepticism when I first stumbled upon it: “Yeah, right, this sure will be just another half-hearted attempt by a frustrated wannabe writer”. But then it turned to do everything that I had hoped for…and much more besides.

Thank you very much for your kind words, Axel. I will certainly take you up on your offer when the time comes. :slight_smile: And actually, Scrivener is well-hidden intentionally - for now. Whilst it is in beta-testing, I have not gone out of my way to advertise it. Soon, when 1.0 comes out, though, there should hopefully be a MacUser UK review, and the ATPO are interested in reviewing it too, and I will submit it to VersionTracker - so hopefully it won’t be quite so hidden for long. :slight_smile:

If it’s any help, I’m fluent in Profanity – or at least I used to be; since I moved to Scrivener from MS Word, I’ve hardly used it…

Hmm. a profanity version - excellent idea.
Take Snapshot could become “Cover your ass” and for me at least “Outline Mode” equals “Dick Around”. “Reveal in Binder” already sounds vaguely suggestive. The possibilities are endlessly childish. :laughing:

Hi, no, localization hasn’t started yet. Sometime in the coming months (it is definitely on the short-ish term plans), but it’s more work than it at first seems.

After all these generous declarations of willingness it’s difficult to find the courage for whispering what I’m going to whisper, but … … is it really such a good idea to start this whole localization thing? It is a lot of work, not only for the translators but certainly also for the developer. And how many potential users of Scrivener will there be who are unable to understand the clear English of Scrivener’s menus (and tutorial / reference guide)? And after every mayor update, all localizations will have to be adjusted. It’s a potentially never ending story.

Wouldn’t it be better if the developer invested the precious time he’s now going to invest in managing a host of localizations, in further development of Scrivener, and / or in The Novel? Of course that’s up to him, and only to him; all I’m trying to say is that a clear and, given the circumstances, perfectly understandable choice for “English only” certainly would have clear advantages not only for the developer, but also for the whole Scrivener community, both in the short and the long run.
