Word count is not working for Scrivenings, which may be part of the bigger Scrivenings issue. But it is also not working when you select a block of text. If I select a block of text of four words, my word count shows as four words in Mac 3. In Windows 2903, it remains the Word Count for the entire document… Interestingly enough, it does not work in 1.9.7 either and shows the word count for the entire document also.

In both 1.9.7 and in 2.9.0.3, the word count for the selection is available via the context menu, so you should still be able to get what you need before the footer method is implemented.
