License buying

I’m planning to buy a Windows license for my sister for one of her Christmas gifts, and I was wondering if anybody could tell me if the license will cover future updates/versions or not? The Linux updates are forced when a version switches though it is still unofficial and in beta. And a lot of software is just for one version of course. If not, do we know when the next version is being released yet? Thanks.

As I understand it, you pay for the major updates e.g. moving from V1.x to 2.x but the minor upgrades (e.g. 1.2 to 1.3) are free. I also believe there’s upgrade pricing for existing users.

I think I read that V2 of the Windows version is likely sometime (late?) in 2013.

Thankyou. I thought that was most likely but it seemed like a good idea to check.

It’s a set fee, right? As opposed to a fee for one year or whatever? If not, I expect the time would start ticking down upon activation?

Right, you get to actually buy something and then keep it, forever! Amazing, isn’t it? No software by subscription here.

Perfect, thanks. All done. Pets serial number

Sorry to post in an old thread. I figured it would be better to post in here rather than make a new thread about the same thing.

Anyway, I bought the license for my sister a while ago. And since I’m using Windows right now due to technical issues and it can be used on more than one machine, I activated it on here too. My sister is talking about getting a new laptop however, and my harddrive is on the way out. I’ve had to reinstall Windows a couple of times already in the past couple of months. I’ve only used the serial once myself as has she. But I know you can only use it so many times before it stops working and I’m a little concerned that my dodgy harddrive will cost her her gift. How many times can it be used, please? And do individual harddrives count, or the individuals that own them? If we both had to use it again, would it count as two uses or four?

As I understand it, you’ve got so many activations a month, and it resets after 2-3 months. So if you have to reinstall things twice in the same month, you’re fine. I know I"ve deleted and recreated my .wine directory 4 times in one day, and I was fine. If you run into trouble, email L&L, and they can sort you out.

Phew. Thankyou.
