list of Styles in a submenu somewhere

For ©, if you required this sort of thing, you could actually use the scriptwriting features, even if you’re not a scriptwriter. The scriptwriting features really just allow you to set some paragraph formatting, give it a name, and set which format should come next when you hit enter (or tab). In the next update, I’m even hoping to have it so that current script formatting gets updated if you change the formatting in the script panel… In other words, the scriptwriting features pretty much provide a method of styles in themselves…

Hi!

I’m discovering Scrivener - look great

I need an information about this feature. Can I preserve inline style (i.e. bold or italic) when I choose a “Style” from the Text Menu (the pop-up menu displayed at the right of the footer view)?

Thanks

The pop-up at the right of the footer is for scriptwriting (it means you are in Scriptwriting mode - Text > Scriptwriting). But yes, it preserves bold and italics etc.

Keith

I’d never thought of doing that, but it’s a great idea. I assume that’s what you’re planning to base Scriv Styles on?

Another possibility, and I’m getting really in touch with my inner style fascist here, is take get Latex on people’s asses and have fairly rigid styles. Define the font in Prefs, then Scriv defines (say) 18pt as Level 1, 16pt as Level 2, 14pt as Level 3, 12pt bold as Level 4 and 12pt as body. And that’s your lot.

From what you’ve said, the problem is the general rubbishness of the OS X text engine, which makes doing anything useful with styles a royal pain unless you want to write your own code. Personally, I’ve always like non WYSIWYG text editing; for one thing, nonserif fonts on a pale background work well on screen, and I prefer serif on white for paper. Let Scriv do what it’s good at, and let Pages/Word/Mellel/whatever do what they’re good at.

On the other hand, you’ve got a product to keep fresh, I guess.

New User…Simpler question: is there a list of styles, where you can re-arrange the order, add/delete, etc. Word’s is horrific…but a simple list of favorites. Must be there, just can’t find it. Thanks

Currently, the only way I know of to manipulate Style definitions, etc. is via the Other… item on the Styles menu which is on the ruler.

As discussed further upthread, the Mac’s native style system is much, much worse than Microsoft Word’s. I don’t think you can change the order of styles as they appear, or even rename them. To get to them, follow Greg’s lead – you have to go to “Other…” and then select the “Favorite styles” radio button in the pane that appears. There you can at least delete them. One way to “reorder” them would be to create new styles with numbered names (“Other…” “Add to favorites”), I guess.
