Locking a script

I have been using Scrivener to write a play, which I will revising as we rehearse. We will be using a “locked page” system as I revise – meaning that, for example, page 43 will always be page 43 when the document is compiled and printed. If the revised page is longer, a new page, 43A, is added.

This is basically the system most screenwriting software programs use. I was wondering if there’s any chance Scrivener might incorporate something like it into the workflow. I know Scriv is not intended to be used for the kind of ready-for-production work that a screenplay program like Final Draft can do, but for my purposes at least, with this one feature, I’d have no need for Final Draft (and the FD price tag) at all.

I do LOVE Scriv. What a wonderful, thoughtful program. Thanks!

Hi,

Thanks for the kind words, much appreciated. I’m afraid there are no plans for anything like this, no. I’m not really sure how something like this would work in Scrivener. With the way you work in chunks, it would require a different interface, or something entirely new. Scrivener doesn’t really know anything about pages, and even in 2.0, where you can view in page layout mode, Scrivener doesn’t have any concept of “fixed” pages. Because of the various extra elements that can be inserted on Compile, Scrivener really has no way of knowing what page text will fall on until the actual compile process.

All the best,
Keith

Thanks Keith. I figured as much, since that’s so much more a “production” feature than a drafting one. Part of what I love about Scrivener is that it’s really good at exactly what it does and doesn’t pretend to do anything else.
