Looking for efficient way to control what's excluded in a compile

Hello.
My project has lots of subdocuments. I’d like to know a way to make a compile into Word such that I can keep certain subdocuments from being included. (Unchecking “include subdocuments” is not an option; I have a lot of subdocuments that I do want included in the compile). The only way I know to do it is to scroll down through all the subdocuments, manually unchecking “include in compile” for each one. Very time consuming. Plus I might have to go back and check some of those boxes later, if I change my mind about what I want included.
If I could somehow instruct Scrivener to leave out all the subdocuments of particular main documents, I’d be satisfied.
Or if I could uncheck those “include in compile” boxes by batches (e.g. highlight a bunch of subdocuments in the collections pane, then click to have them all unincluded), I’d be satisfied.
If there was a keyboard shortcut for checking and unchecking that “include in compile” box, so I don’t have to mouse over to the right, then mouse back to the left to the collections pane to scroll to the next subfolder, over and over and over, that would be helpful.
Many thanks.
Jeff

I’m not in a position to try this on Windows, but on a Mac you can do the following:

  1. Select all the documents you want to compile in the Binder
  2. Go to Outline view, and add ‘Include in Compile’ as a column heading. (If you’re going to be doing this often, consider created a custom layout for it.)
  3. opt-click in any one of the ‘Incude in Compile’ checkboxes will toggle them all on and off (they don’t even have to be highlighted in the outline.)

Steps 1 and 2 are common to both Mac and Windows. Step 3 is a basic MacOS feature available across any list of this type. Hopefully there is an equivalent for Windows.

Even if it isn’t, then it’s simpler to go down an outline list ticking/unticking than it is to look in the Inspector every time.

But… there’s an easier way compile a subset of documents in the Binder, without having to untick boxes.

  1. Select the ones you want to compile in the Binder
  2. Compile, and in the right hand panel dropdown box choose ‘Compile: Current Selection’.

Note the option to include sub-documents: if you select that you only need to select the parent chapters, not all the individual sub-documents.

Do either of those help?

Another way is a Compile Collection choose multiple documents right click to add to the collection. You can have multiple collections for different purposes and do not have to change compile status on any document.

And above the right hand side column in the Compile Overview window, a Filter icon is located. You could add a Label in one go to all documents that should not be Compiled, and exclude those from compilation.

Thanks. That is quicker than going into the “custom metadata” window for each document.

Thanks. I like this. I didn’t know about the ability to make collections.

Thank you. I haven’t been using the label feature. Your suggestion is a good way for me to control what sorts of compilations I make.
