Looking for writing project tracking app

Thanks Rebecca for your input.
As mentioned in a prior post, for now I am using a spreadsheet. A fairly complex one in terms of coding, but I wanted it to be entirely automated beyond me just enter in some basic project data, and then data from each writing session.

Whilst looking for solutions to this (including spreadsheets, software (Win/Mac), iphone apps, etc.) I noted what to me looked like a relatively large number of people wanting exactly what I was looking for. I much rather use a well designed and dedicated OSX application for this than a spreadsheet I (or someone else) have hacked together. Which is why I asked here if any of my fellow writings know of such a thing.

I am not sure I understand what you are suggestion with regards to Omnifocus. I use that as my Getting Things Done system, as opposed to recording and storing data such as progress on a writing project. I am not sure how it would be useful for that. Perhaps you had in mind the tracking of a writing project in terms of tasks to do, and reminders etc.? That differs from what I am looking for.

:bulb: What I want, in a nutshell, is an application for tracking the progress of a writing project… based on the deadline for the project, the intended aprox. final pages, and then taking into account my average WPM, etc., and then producing an overview of how much writing (in time, and words) I’ll need to do each remaining day based on performance up to now, etc…

With thanks…

you’re right: i was thinking of omnifocus to track tasks. that’s how i use it.

i think i understand what you mean now. an app like the one you’re describing would be very nice to have. are you thinking about creating one?

Here’s another suggestion: Bento 4 plus its Project Manager templates.
I use Bento all the time; it’s one of the easier DB apps to set up and maintain.
It makes management of Address Book and iPhoto data a snap.
And there’s now a large array of free templates available, all easy to revise or adapt.

If you are an iWork '09 Numbers user, here are some templates for it:

Slightly OT but related to druid’s suggestion above: there’s even a new Bento 4 template aimed at writers. Not a project tracker, but a “Campbell/Vogler” framework. Here it is: Story Base. It could be easily adapted, if you like that kind of thing.

Thanks Hugh and Druid,
I have Bento 3, but almost never use it… so won’t be upgrading to v4.
I did look at the description of the template called Story Base you linked to (Hugh… thank you), and I get the impression it’s for actually writing in… much in the way Scrivener is for. If that is the case, I do not think it’s what I am looking for. I don’t wish to replace Scrivener (irreplaceable in my view), nor do I wish to double up any work (such as copying data from Scriv to Story Base in order to get some kind of progress tracking.
Of course, I’ve not actually been able to open the template, so perhaps it does more (or something different) than the description of it suggests.

Cheers…

Well, there’s also a Project Manager for Bento 3.
Free, and you download it from here:

Thanks Linn,
I have briefly checked out Tinderbox. Looks like it may have a fairly significant learning… Seems like a powerful application though, with many possibilities. I’ll perhaps look at it more deeply when I have a heap of spare time to throw at something like that.
Thank you for brining it to my attention. May come in handy one day.
