and this in my compiled PDF:

I have this in my Scrivener:
Is your W assigned a character attributes style?
No, I select the first paragraph and select “opening-para” style, which is mine with no indents. I then select the first character and change the font size.
OK.
But at compile, the style will apply to the whole paragraph.
If you want this to work, set your W to the way you want it (in the editor), select it and create a C.A.S.
That’s the only way it’ll stick to your desired formatting through compile.
(Preserve formatting would also work, but with potential inconvenients in the future.)
(Leave the style you already have to your paragraph untouched.)
When I select the paragraph, it shows opening para+CAS. However, when I compile, I still don’t get the desired output. Is there any other thing I’m supposed to check?
The C.A.S. is only for the W
You can also use Preserve Formatting Format / Preserve Formatting
, but I advise against it.
Especially since it is a single letter, you may very well forget it is there, and it makes compiling less versatile if ever you wish to change things a little, but not in the editor.
Maybe I’m doing something wrong. When I select the para I apply opening para style. I then select the first char and apply CAS. The window shows opening para+CAS
Perfect. That’s how it should be.
Now, compile?
BTW, this ONLY happens for back-matter. For othe chapters, I don’t need to do this. I get the desired output.
Apply the C.A.S. to some other random letter. Does the letter become big? (In the editor.)
I don’t know.
You could try Preserve Formatting, or, for science, add a space before your W, see if that space kicks the bug or something.
. . . . . . .
Wait…
No, what? The C.A.S. doesn’t make other letters big?
If that’s so, that is what’s wrong.
(I had not seen your reply, only the big e from “free”.)
You need to create the C.A.S. off of a big W. You can’t change its size (W) after the fact. If you do, it’ll compile small, as it was stored in the C.A.S.
Select your big W and update/redefine the C.A.S.
Is that back-matter document assigned to the same section type as the well behaving documents/chapters ?
Yay! That was it. I assigned it as n/a and it started to work. Phew.
Good.
Still, the C.A.S. should have made it work…
For future reference :
You don’t need to use a style to have a no-indent first paragraph.
There is a setting for that in the compile format.
Can you point it to me?
My guess this would also work if applied the Section Layout As-Is to the Back Matter with the Character style used as suggested by Vincent.
