I’m a Ulysses user and am intrigued by Scrivener. Because Apple won’t release a subcompact notebook, I must use Windows when I travel. Does anyone know of a “dual” operating system program for writers? I bought WriteItNow, it’s a good program and I love the ability to go back and forth between OSX and XP, but the carbon “look and feel” is dated.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
I do not know what you mean exactly by subcompact, but see macrumors.com/pages/2006/12/ … 4048.shtml .
I would think that the new MacBook qualifies as a subcompact: 13 inch screen, fast processor, big drive and a Superdrive to boot. Get that, install Scrivener (or CopyWrite) and you are good to go.
Intriguing. I love my 12" iBook, so I’m glad I’m waiting a bit before upgrading to an Intel machine. Thanks.
I’ve owned the 15 and 17" powerbooks, and I would grab a 12" MBP in a heartbeat. I needed a small computer well over a year ago, and bought the Thinkpad X60, which is an excellent machine. A little over 2.5 pounds, full keyboard, 7 hr battery, etc. Not thrilled with Windows, but I needed the small hardware.
I would say any of Apple’s small notebooks classify as compact. A sub-compact is truly miniscule. Sony used to make some, perhaps they still do. Apple doesn’t make anything remotely that small.
Hi meagvg,
Yes, I quite like WriteItNow. r1 was released yesterday.
Go to setup and ask it to let you use the new look and feel. That way you can use the Mac version on your Mac and the windows version on your ‘other’ computer. They can read each others files. But, the new ‘look and feel’ tries to use some of the Quartz resolution stuff, as far as I can tell, so at least the fonts resolve well enough on a Mac now.
Well, I’m absolutely sure that if Apple would ever decide to make an ultra portable notebook similar to the Sony Vaio TX, it would become a huge hit.
My present laptop is a G3 12" iBook. The 13" MacBooks of the last generation are just a little bit too big for my taste. So if Apple would ever ship a 11-12" MacBook … …

The 12" iBook and PowerBook were beautifully small while remaining fully functional, unlike those Vaio. I personally have a rule against buying laptops, but both of those brought me perilously close to breaking it!
Lord Lightning,
Wow, thanks for the tip. Makes the text on my Mac so much better. My eyes thank you as well.
One of these days, I’m actually going to investigate menus and use them.
I’d gone back to Ulysses and Scrivener and loaded my revisions, etc. Figured I’d pack Write It Now away and use Word on the Windows machine. So until Scrivener or Ulysses develops a Win/Mac solution it appears I’ve got a decent “dual-machine” program.
