Macbook Pro Batt Life -- Fullscreen vs. Regular Mode?

Just wondering if anyone who’s using a MacBook Pro (SL 10.6.3) can confirm if they’re getting higher battery drain when writing in Fullscreen Mode (FSM)?

Personally I prefer writing in FSM with only Scrivener running & wi-fi turned OFF to the minimize the gravitational pull of my built-in Generation Y A.D.D., but I have since given it up while traveling and/or away from a/c power due to the fact that it seems I get better battery life writing in RM with wi-fi ON and an app like Adium running in the background compared to FSM with everything shut off.

All I’ve found so far is that In Regular Mode (RM) the Activity Monitor shows that Scrivener draws about 10% of the CPU while typing, but since I can’t pull up the Activity Monitor while in FSM there’s no way to confirm how much higher that percentage jumps… My gut tells me that there’s a significantly higher CPU draw for Scrivener to black out the screen and suppress all the OS elements/resources… Does this sound logical?

I know it might not matter to most, but I’d be curious for my own personal reference so that I can maximize my productivity. Thanks to all who can chose to add their two cents…

Hi,

(Note I’ve moved this to Technical Support.)

This is a known issue, I’m afraid. The issue isn’t so much to do with blacking out the screen, though - it is more a typing issue in general which has been exacerbated by changes made in Snow Leopard, and for some reason full screen mode exacerbates it even further so that it becomes noticeable.

I recently spent over a month optimising typing and these surrounding issues for version 2.0, so hopefully when version 2.0 comes out later in the year (I’m shooting for September) these problems will be a thing of the past.

All the best,
Keith

Thanks for the insight Keith. My apologies for posting in the wrong section. Definitely looking forward to see what you got cooking for the latest and greatest in Sept.

This topic interests me, although I notice that it’s quite old - now that 2.0 is out can anyone confirm for me whether the battery life problem with full screen mode still persists?

Grant

I now notice no difference in battery life between fullscreen mode or not. As far as I’m concerned all the battery issues from 1.x are a non issue with 2.x

I’m running OSX 10.6.6 on a late 2009 2.26GHz / 8GB 13" MBP, I generally get between 5 & 6 hours of Scrivener usage on a full charge.

Thanks Jenny - yes, this should no longer be an issue because of the optimisations I put in place for 2.0.

Thanks and all the best,
Keith
