Long time user of Windows version, recently purchased Mac version, and items are missing from the upper menu, including ‘file’ ‘edit’ ‘help’ etc. Otherwise the software seems to be functional. I have not been able to find a solution, so seek assistance. The software was downloaded a few weeks ago and is installed on a Mac mini with Sonoma 14.6.1. Thanks
Weird. But the menu bar is visible? Do you see the or Scrivener
menus?
Yes, it just starts at ‘view’ rather than ‘file.’ The only Apple icon I see if on the Mac mini menu.
Could you download and install the latest version (3.4.0) from December 11th and see if that helps? Download Scrivener - Literature & Latte
I will do that. There is no ‘help’ on the menu, so I cannot update directly or check the version. I don’t think I have 3.4.0, so your advice is helpful. Thanks
Even if there was Help
in the menu bar you would not be able to look up the version or update. The standard location for these menu items is underneath the app name in the menu bar. Do you see the Scrivener
menu item? And is the Scrivener window actually frontmost?
Do you use an app that alters the menu bar, e. g. Hidden Bar
or Bartender
? How big is your screen?
The portion of the toolbar that is visible allows me to go into the composition mode, and moving the cursor to the top of the screen opens the full toolbar. I am using a very large screen and all apps other than Scrivener come with Sonoma. Since all of my experience with Scrivener is with the Windows version, I continue to think maybe I am just overlooking some setting or technique. The toolbar that I can access in the composition mode is a drop-down that is visible only when the cursor is at the top of the page. I am not sure what you mean by ‘frontmost.’ Except for the abbreviated toolbar, what I see is identical to what I see in Windows.
A screen shot of the full screen view of Scrivener in macOS would be informative.
As I prepared to get the screenshot, I saw that the ‘missing’ menu bar is at the top of the screen, displayed not as part of the Scrivener screen but separately on the screen background just as the menu for Apple apps are displayed with this operating system. I obviously did not expect that, based on my Windows experience. Live and learn. Thanks.
Now I really want a screenshot. Feeling completely lost between toolbar, menu bar, “Mac mini menu”, “portion of the toolbar”, “full toolbar”, “abbreviated toolbar”, “screen background” (and why are we suddenly in Composition mode?)

Did you find out why some menu items were not visible (but others were)? I understand this was in part due to confusion, different OS and stuff, but I’m still puzzled how that happened.
The report about missing items was made when I was only seeing what is at the top of the scrivener display. At that point I did not see the toolbar that is imposed on the computer screen, above the Scrivener display. Now that I am aware of both toolbars, I suppose everything is as it should be. I have vision limitations that may have played a part, along with my expectation that I would see a Scrivener display identical to what I see with the Windows version. (Yes, I have two excuses.). If what I see now is not normal, I’m okay so long as it works. Again, thanks for the help.
Yeah, I once had a Mac. The Menu Bar doesn’t shrink with a Window, as on Windows. It took some getting used to, along with the Delete key being backspace and delete being (I can’t remember what). But the MacBook ran Windows on Parallels with 4GB of RAM better than my 16GB Windows machine, so maybe there’s a semblance of truth to Apple Math.
Apple calls it “forward delete”, either ⌦
on a bigger keyboard or fn
⌫
on the compact ones.
Also ⌃D works the same.
