The L&L website offers a “reader view” to mobile (iOS) devices, but the forum doesn’t offer up either that same choice or a proper mobile version of itself…or it doesn’t to my tiny iPod touch.
I installed a ForumRunner plug-in a while back. It works all right, nothing fancy, but maybe a step up from using a browser if you don’t like the theme on mobile.
The plug-in is the part in the website, you don’t have to worry about that. It just provides the necessary interface for the ForumRunner app (which yes you have to get from iTunes) to do its thing with a forum. I sometimes get an error when logging in, but I’ve never noticed any negative effects.
Hmph, so it is, shows how much I use it for anything other than reading, I suppose. It seems to work okay in iOS 8 for that, but not for much else. Well I suppose I’ll have to figure something out as a replacement. A theme for mobiles would be my preferred option, I’ve made a note to look into it.
Yeah it’s never something that really bothered me for some reason. I personally really like zooming and panning a page to read it, that’s how I’ve always done it from the first iPod Touch. I often don’t care at all for the mobile version as you can’t zoom out and get the big picture and are stuck with a 48pt body text font more often than not for some reason. I’ve seen some sites with the font so massive, with so much leading, you could only read half a dozen lines at a time—on a screen that is only a bit shy of a paperback novel in height and 300 DPI! I’ll usually look for a way to get out of the mobile version of a site if I can. But some of the buttons and controls in phpBB do press the limits of that—those little orange icons to jump to the newest unread post for example.
Mainly, what I’m saying is, there may be a lot of mobile things for phpBB, but I have to find one that doesn’t make me want to cry.
Looked through the L&L stylesheets. Can see that the forum doesn’t come with a responsive css stylesheet (as the phpbb.com forum does). Answered my own Q.
Oh I’m sure plenty of people like the look, I just don’t get along with it very often. The phpBB mobile theme is quite nice though, a reasonable font size, no hugely stripped back functionality that I can see, and it retains the feel of the original. I can definitely fly with that—my guess is its not working because we modified the default theme a long time ago to change the header and such, before any of this was something anyone did, so it hasn’t benefited from updates.
And what are the chances of it being tweaked to support the responsive design? Or not enough demand to warrant an update? I can’t be the only one, can I?
The chances are very good, it’s a bit of a job though since I need to sort out what all the custom ProSilver theme fork has that we’d need carried over to the modern version of it, it’s more than just the header. So unfortunately I cannot just flick a switch.
Well, you can except that, apart from the fact it would be extremely unlikely, I can also personally confirm that you’re not (the only one). I often visit the forum on my iPad and occasionally from my phone. Double tap is your friend (but a responsive site even more so).
To summarise in almost functional grammar: Hey AmberV, wot she said!*
